I've just got back from a trip to the USofA and while over there picked up a copy of 'Sail' magazine. As a Brit I'm slightly embarassed to admit that it beats our sailing magazines into a cocked hat.
I stopped regularly buying sailing magazines some time ago because no single one of them fulfils what I want from a read - and I don't want to have to buy several of them each month.
Why can't I have a magazine that combines the practicality of PBO, the cruising nous of YM, some of the racing and tuning coverage of Y&Y, a bit of pretty wooden stuff à la CB and some of the glamour of YW ?
'Sail' seems to manage it pretty well - the issue I picked up has features ranging from electric power engines and optimsing sail shape with battens, an interview with Olivier de Kersauson as part of a larger feature on cruising and racing tri's, some interesting cruising logs, rogue waves, and a family living aboard a 1923 86ft Fife cutter. Perhaps this variety is best summed up by the two boat reviews: a Southerly 135 and Sydney 32! There's even a couple of articles by our very own Tom Cunliffe (although heavily edited to give an American accent which is amusing).
Surely there is space in the market for one magazine in the UK that can do a bit of everything?
