Am I being a kill Joy?

Sorry but I think that is unacceptable............there is a time and place for enjoying a little speed etc and it is not amongst, or close to, anchored boats. Things I do that may annoy others will, hopefully, not increase calls for regulation because another poor unfortunate is killed or seriously injured as a result of somebody being nosey and frantic inappropriately.

Quite right , I'll remind you all again.
Read up on last years events , it should make everyone think twice when hooning around on the water , towing member of your family in a ring between moored boats is an accident waiting to happen , one rouge wave or boat moving on its anchor can soon obstruct the path of someone being towed at speed , 25 knots to zero into the back of a boat is going to hurt, no one wears any protection other than a buoyancy aid . It would cost very little to zone areas for this activity and likewise zones to anchor where at least you could relax knowing your safe.

Around here there are police on jet skis looking for idiots described here. You get pulled over and bollo@ked for acting like an inconsiderate tw@t. If you really pi@@ a them off they ask to see your VAT receipt. That usually calms things down. Some of the crew get quite excited by the young men in tight lycra wet uniforms.

Slight thread drift, but are boaters who anchor inside the private beach warning buoys off the beach at Osborne still told to move as its private ?

Some people are just inconsiderate / thick depending on how charitable you feel. I was changing the props on our boat a few years ago in a big bay with around 1. 4 m of water ( tide was dropping, so I couldn't have gone more inshore). Lo and behold, some jetskiers arrived and spent all their time at "our" end of the bay. I know it was not our's, but honestly, why do people behave like such prats !

I can see both sides of this, having been a 'skier' and now a 'moorer'! The skiers want to ski in the calmer, sheltered water. This is also where people want to moor.

when we use to ski ,we liked to be based in a bay or on the beach to have a base for rest and its nice to come in and start from the beach ,then some 40ft boat would come and anchor ,then complain we were skiing
Yes. We have been skiing in the lee of the headland. Nice day, yachts arrive, start to moor up. Eventually there is not enough room to ski safely so we move out to the less sheltered water in the middle of the bay. After twenty minutes or so a large yacht rolls up and anchors right where we are skiing. Ten minutes later and he's asking us (not particularly politely) to "go somewhere else and do that!"

It would cost very little to zone areas for this activity and likewise zones to anchor where at least you could relax knowing your safe.
Jennycliff bay is the designated waterski area in Plymouth Sound. On a nice day it's full of anchored yachts. Do they think 'This is the only place those guys are allowed to ski; how about we stay down one end and leave the other free for them to enjoy their hobby'? Do they F!&k!

Whether the OP is a killjoy depends really on whether RIBs turned up and started towing through the middle of anchored boats (Darwin levels of stupidity apart from the question of selfishness) or whether boats turned up and moored where people were skiing (just as selfish surely???)

My view is live and let live. Some people like it quiet and tranquil others like it more noisey and frantic. Neither is right. I am certain we all do things that annoy others.

I would suggest that most prefer tranquil to being rocked about by idiots. I also suspect that most of us try very hard not to do things that annoy others.

If you ran off and told teacher at the school I went to you soon got your head flushed down the toilet.................... No one like a grass in my opinion

Fortunately your 'grassy' opinion is irrelevant as far as i am concerned, i would happily be a grass as you call it and call the police/coastguard if it can avoid someone getting hurt or injured as the poor girl who died here a few weeks ago because of inconsiderate jetskiers .

By the way, as regards your unfortunate school head flushing habits, you would have been in for a nasty surprise if you came after me . :)

If you escalate the possible situation to the extreme and then play the health and safety card then of course your argument seems to win. The truth is many people nowadays will film low level infringements and make reports to authorities. Very sad in my opinion

So many people complain on here about being rocked about yet they bought a boat. Did they think it would not rock. If people do try very hard not to annoy others then excellent I say. But is that true

I would say it's true about those who post on here. As for the others, possibly not. How about you?

If you are referring to trying not to upset others while boating yes indeed I try my best. As an example this weekend I was out with my Brother and his family and with another family with the sports boats and a ringo. I had 6 people to give ringo rides to and there were several slow craft passing by the area. Each time I waited for a clear area while the slow craft passed. Interesting when all the children are shouting to get going

If you're anchored in a designated water ski area (not sure if the area talked about by the op was a designated water ski area or not) then it shouldnt come as a great surprise to find people water skiing around you.

If its not a designated water ski area then youre within your rights to ask people to not water ski around you.

Seems simple enough to me

So..lets say there are a few boats towing about 250m off Priory Bay and you anchor in the middle of them...they all have to pack up and go home?
Priory Bay changes so much with the tide...yes I have seen silly things there and yes I have also got frustrated but on the whole everyone gets by.If you think you can anchor there on a summer weekend and be undisturbed then you are being a bit naive!
Op maybe 100 pct right on this occasion...but it is the one spot in the Solent that we all have to give and take a bit..including the ribs and wakeboarders etc
(NO..I dont ski or ringo!)

If you anchor in the middle of a load of people already towing then thats your choice and you shouldnt complain about it.

Thats just common sense isnt it?

Similarly if youand other boats are anchored and someone starts towing (and its not a designated ski area) then the person towing shouldnt be surprised if they get told to clear off

I think people are getting a little confused here.

If an area is not a designated ski area and there are no other restrictions then it is an area for all to use. Just because a person wishes to anchor that does not mean a ski boat cant also do their own thing.

After all a person skiing or on a towable is interesting to watch.

Always try not to be a grumpy old kill joy

If you are anchored in an unrestricted area and end up with jet skis etc buzzing about then they are intruding on your space. They cause wake, make noise and could have an accident involving you. If they were silent, safe and wake free this thread would never have been started.

Problem with the Solent is there's too many idiots with far too much testosterone and horsepower. Mandatory tests for anybody with an engine over 100 hp!!

So you prove my point, if you're interested enough in boating to join this forum the you're much more likely to be a responsible thoughtful boater. Unfortunately there are many others who either don't give a toss or don't realise what effect they're having on others around them, more likely to be the latter.

Hang on...Priory Bay is extremely popular place to ringo and waterski. In fact it is probably by far the most popular place in the Solent to do that. No one can seriously turn up there on a good summer weekend and be amazed there are sportsboats and ribs. I am not saying it always goes in balance but this is not the place to expect a quiet anchorage.Try another couple of miles eastwards...
