Alternator for KAD 44's

I can’t see how that’s a genuine Volvo item at that price .
The genuine item is actually manufactured by Valero which is a French company . The devil is in the detail and whilst it says in the advert the alternator fits all the range of engines yes it does physically but what it doesn’t state is the important part like it’s rated output. Look on Volvopenta parts website through a dealer , look at each engine in your case the 44 has a smaller output than the one for example the 63 P or 74p so in effect your not getting what you pay for.
In past years I made a comment about Chinese alternators supplied by a non franchised dealer and ended up with a solicitors letter threatening action, you pays your money and makes your choice.
I will add that you will also need to fit your existing pulley and fan which on an old rusted unit is very difficult to remove with workshop facilities and some form of blow torch .
Out of interest when supplying new it’s a genuine unit only.

If it was genuine it would be green wouldn't it?

not always - you often have to paint the bits yourself. looking at the OPs link to YachtBoatParts, if you select genuine volvo at the bottom of the page the price is £314-00 plus vat. Last year I changed an alternator on a friends porsche boxster.
OEM porsche price £1100 !!!! for an alternator FFS. And its the same alternator used on nearly every german car currently in manufacture.
Local autospares trade counter for an equivalent £150. - its still working perfectly fine.

Last year in China they made 24,000,000 cars trucks and buses. Last time I was there they all pretty much seemed to be working perfectly well. I wouldn't use copy parts inside an engine but I don't have any problem using them as ancillaries.

I had my alternator go while on a summer cruise. Took it in to be repaired as a new one couldn't be supplied quick enough and the chap at the alternator shop said it was off a Volvo 240. I said no, Penta KAD 42. He just laughed and sold me a genuine unit for a 240 @ £120. It's worked absolutely fine charging 3 x 110A/h batteries for the last couple years.

I,ll sit on the fence on this one .
Here’s why
With the advent of the www / tinternet a few years ago I waltzed into my local Merc dealership to collect a car from its service .
Got there a bit early , the Russian modal esq meeter and greeter sat me down with a coffee in front of a B and O tv in fine leather chairs , after a while board with the CNN Chanel I got up and saw a display of parts in a cabinet .
Hmm I thought so boys toys oily bits .:)

It was a real eye opener ——
What they had were “ pattern parts “ and genuine MB parts sectioned and labled .
Starter motors , alternator s , filters , shockers , bushes ,etc
You could visably see for example , while say an alternator looked the same from the outside , the “pattern “ had weedy bearings , fewer thicker windings and such like .Ok same mounting bracket so it would fit .
The oil filter s were was sectioned in 1/2 - had less paper vanes - as said looked the same canister .

Since then I,am cautious re tinterneting cheap parts .

By all means find an alternative Vaeleo alternator or Bosch’s starter or what ever to the official VP blue box part - and yup those may be made in China , it’s not where it’s how !
Nowt wrong with a EU Co outsourcing cos the reputed ones will have decent quality control .

I think you have to judge each decision on its own merits , with this example an alternator I would fret about the voltage not being right and 8uggering up somthing else ,also the durability in a marine environment of a “ pattern “ on top of the issues I allready raised .
So for me I would hunt down a Vaelo at the very least .

YES!! To add to my above post I had to buy the pulley from keypart as my tacho's were no longer in sync. To the naked eye that looked the same size within a mm or two but also the way the belt sat in the pulley added to the difference. I bought 2 matching pulleys to solve that issue but it took a lot of head scratching to figure that one out.

If you have the later type rev counters with the lcd display you can match the reading with a hand held tachometer .

Thanks for all the comments. Was looking for the Valeo version but was not sure of the right code. Some of the new prices were similar to a rebuild so I thought I might just replace so I could get the job done in one go.

Just as I told you before, the cheap imitations are rubish! They fall apart sometimes and are charging to much and then your dynamo warning will go off. So stick to Valeo but try to buy them at a automotive garage.

When I had problems with mine while on a cruise I stopped off at Caernarfon to see if I could get it repaired at a rewinders. He took one look at it and said something about a Volvo 40 and I said no, boat, he just smiled nodded sagely, said, same thing and gave me a new one for a tiny fraction of the dealer price. Cant fault it. Works fine.

You told us that Bruce in post #7 :)!

I know this is an old thread but somebody recently pointed out that automotive alternators won't have a spark arrestor.

Is this true? Does it matter for a diesel (as opposed to petrol) engine?

Also, does anyone know if the Keyparts alternators are genuine OEM units - https://www.keypart.com/stock/873770-r ?

Spark arrestors only matter if you have a gas engine. No problem with diesels.
