I have just spent 3 days of my four day Day Skipper course being taught by John Hart, who to put is simply was fantastic. If in 20 years I know 5% of what he knows I shall count myself lucky.

All my self taught theory was OK, so I managed to by pass the shorebased course. My last day comes in a month, after he has delivered a boat across the Atlantic and my only week point is close quarters boat handling, which I now need to brush up on with practice. I know what I am doing wrong, and know how to do it right but just need to get my brain in gear so I can actually do it right.

My last day is a day/night trip visiting some destinations in the Bristol Channel and returning about 3 am to wait for the lock to open. So that should be good experience.

I know John must have taoght many of todays instructors and authors. I count myself lucky to have been taught by him.

Just thought I should let you know how I got on.

In about a month when John Hart returns with the boat from USA.

Fairly handy having the gap really as it gives me time to put into practice what I have been taught. I wil now be popping around the marina berthing in all the odd spots.

I do not have any problems with the navigation and theory stuff to past Day Skipper - in fact I will carry on and do the shore based offshore course this year so as to get it out of the way.

Just need the experience and that takes time.

Excellent stuff Gludy. IHMO dayskip practical is a very useful course, in fact the extra material covered by Coastal Skip practical seems marginal. Anyway will you be popping round the corner to the Solent this Summer then? <G>

JFm - My plan is to do the Bristol Channel ports first - Padstow etc- then nip around to Falmouth - then maybe Ireland, then the south coast and over the channel. Just when these trips happen is down to when I have gained enough experience ..... yes, south coast is probable this season.
