Hi All,

It has been a couple of years since I was last at Alderney. My recollection of the bogs/showers are that they were only marginally better than municipal park bogs. I hope to be there again in the next couple of weeks. Can anyone update me on the facilities
Any recent improvements known ?

Was there last weekend and would suggest they are still the same. Eat at First & Last. Food OK but expensive. Not in any rush to go back. Guernsey restaurants much better quality and cheaper.

The showers are fine, bit basic but they do the job. Lot better than the midden at West Cowes or the like! First and Last well cher but the Bray Chippie round the corner is one of the best chippies you will find anywhere and you could always eat up in town. Hire a bike and spend a brill day gently pedalling round the island or put a few golf clubs on board and and have 9 holes. So long as there ain't a N/E or Easterly I love going there.

Depends on what you expect! With a very small population and limited finances i think the Island offers a great deal. Fantastic walks, cycling, swimming and views and personally I have always enjoyed Nellie grey's Indian.
Regards.

Peter.

Was wondering just HOW many years ago you visited ... because I remember them 20yrs back when they *were* awful; then they built the current ones but they were privately operated for some years and you had to pay. I find them quite acceptable, especially as anchoring is still (I hope!) free.

Please don't wish the suggested marina development on Alderney!.

Oh, and you don't need a bicycle ... you'd have to walk it up the hill anyway, and you can easilly walk around the Island in a day.

It's still nice to cycle around, stopping off from place to place and taking your time.

Regards.

Peter.

I can't think of any reason why not?

I was thinking encroachment by private moorings. I last dropped anchor there in 1988, lovely place particularly after a 22 hour 1st solo crossing.

I went last bank holiday when apparently the tradition on that day was to offer this free milky alcohol concoction in all the pubs. No one would admit what was in it but we still drunk it - rude not too. First time there and it was the best laugh for a long time.

Sorry I can't remember what the anchoring charges are but I think I heard £2.50 and yes toilets are great.

Small population, that part is self evident but limited finances don’t think so!

Alderney is part of the bailiwick of Guernsey and is for the most part not treated very well and defiantly not in a pro rata way regarding funding. The islands spent years ignoring their real bread and butter, the tourists and pandered to the new GODs of banking. The place is coming down with money, but it is also full of self-serving politicians. The normal people are very kind and generous spirited but they also have long memories for them that have wronged them.

Guernsey’s mariner facilities are some of the best maybe they will get around to Alderney some day. Or maybe Alderney could revolt and spend some of the off shore gambling licence fees.

Any way the best crab salads and chilled Chably served up the high street on the left-hand side in their sheltered garden.
