Albin vega

Well yes prior to the rain I thought I had cured the leak!

I imagine a lot of people fondly imagined they had cured leaks this Summer, conveniently ignoring the total lack of rain !

We get a small amount of rain coming in down the mast on our Vega. So far I have ignored it, but will be interested if you find a solution!

The only way water can get in is through the mast fittings as far as I can see.My plan, as there have been no ideas is to inject foam up the aperture and quicklyblock off the hole .....then drill a few holes in the mast track to the water can drain out.Rain water is degrading the mast bulkhead so important it’s cured.

I am not sure if that would work well. I have only used foam once (at home to block of holes) and I remember it was difficult to judge how much the foam would expand - and in this case how would you know where to drill the holes to allow water to escape. Foam has excellent gap filling properties but in this situation I doubt you could rely on it being waterproof. The water might be following the route of the electrical cables, and if bundles together the foam might not penetrate into the middle of the bundle.
Finally, foam does not settle level, so inside the mast you would have little pockets where water would collect.
As you are out of the water (and it is not an expensive operation where you are) I suggest you unstep the mast and see what is going on.

We sailed a Vega to the Caribbean back in 1981/2 and have fond memories of the boat. We came across one that was much faster than ours...it turned out the guy had dumped the engine overboard. However more relevant to you he had also cut the mast slightly shorter owing to corrosion where the mast sat on the stainless deck plate. I also seem to remember it was possible to tension the mast up too tight and bend the door frame enough to make it difficult to close the forecabin door..something worth looking at. The only other significant problem was a leak that turned out to be from where the 2 halves of the hull were joined together! Good luck!

I have water exiting from the bottom of the mast or deck collar any idea how to cure it or where the water could be coming from, thanks

There are plenty of gaps in the mast where it can enter.

If it's exiting externally, then it isn't a problem; if it's coming into the cabin it's probably running down the mast wiring in which case ensure you've formed a drip loop - the water will then exit the base of the mast via the mast step.

There was a recent thread on this in the Yahoo Albin Vega group.

That’s sounds like are problem! Thanks

Also, you don't want to block the mast with foam, it's part of the passive ventilation system - the mast acts like a chimney.
