After 5 years my Comar ais receiver is no longer working properly, so I am about to install an Em-trek AIS transceiver.
It is going to connect to the chart plotter via an nmea cable.
This may sound daft but do I need to connect up both transmit and receive nmea wires from the transponder to the plotter
The reason I'm asking is because I thought the transponder had a GPS inside it as they have a GPS antenna connected to them, but I am now assuming it gets its info from my plotter.

AIS tranceivers have their own dedicated GPS receiver. You only need to connect NMEA wiring to send the AIS data to the plotter.

Just to be clear, the Em-trak requires its own dedicated receiver, but it isn’t integral to the transceiver.

I installed one at the beginning of the season and bought a package of transceiver, splitter and gps antenna. It was a great benefit coming across from Salcombe to Guernsey today. I knew at a glance exactly how much room I had to cross the shipping lanes. I manoeuvred to go behind one vessel and one changed course to go behind me, and I knew that none of the others were a problem for me nor me to them.

Em-Trak have several models. Most have an integrated GPS antenna (plus the option of an external one if needed). The basic B100 model requires the external antenna.

In all cases the GPS receiver is integral to the device.

That's what I thought, I only need to send info to the plotter.
I have the B100 model, which includes a GPS antenna. The instructions don't make it clear for me.
They say to connect the 2 transmit wires and the 2 receive wires.
To make matters worse I can't get the configuration CD to work.
They have to be the worst instructions I have ever read.
Wish I hadn't bought it now

The B100 has bi-directional multiplexing, so caters for a variety of different installation scenarios, especially if the plotter has only one NMEA port. But if all you want to do is feed AIS data to the plotter, you only need to connect the brown and blue wires to your plotter's NMEA input.

Yeah, it's a little odd that it includes two bidirectional ports, so four pairs of wires, but I guess it allows flexibility for a variety of configurations. The AIS doesn't appear to use any data that you might send it, just pass it through onto the other port. If you don't need any of that then it's just the brown and blue wires you're interested in.

To make matters worse I can't get the configuration CD to work.

I configured a B300 a while back and it worked fine for me. The PC software appears to be essentially the same tool as comes with the McMurdo Smartfind transmitters, which again is a little clunky but has always worked.

In what way did it not work for you?

Thanks for explaining that, so white and green are not to be connected, which is what I thought.

As regards the CD I don't know, I click on execute the wizard installs it successfully, but no menu comes up.

Should I have the AIS connected by the USB when I download.

I bought the unit from JG Technologies which is only 5 minutes away from me. John said he would configure it for me if I had problems

You'll need to have the AIS connected with USB in order to configure it obviously, but the software should start up without it.

It's long enough ago that I can't remember exact step-by-step instructions.

When you say "the wizard", do you mean the installer? So you believe you've installed the software onto your PC successfully?

"No menu comes up" when? When you try to run the software? Or you're expecting it to just start spontaneously? It might well not do that, you have to actually run it...

I put the CD in, click on the exe.file and it asks if I want it to allow to the programme to make changes to my computer, I click okay. Then it says it will create a short cut, to run it, but nothing appears on my desk top
I check on programs, it's their, but can't seem to run it.
Probably me not being computer savy enough.

Tried the cd on my friends computer with the same results.
Downloaded AISpro2 from the raymarine site, all worked fine.
Installed the transponder and all working well.
Thanks for the help
