I have an AIS receiver which has a single USB output- which is also the power supply- plugged into a laptop via USB which runs PCPlotter navigation software. Is there a way I can get a. Wi-Fi signal out of this setup? I’d like to get AIS on my tablet which I use in the cockpit. I know I can get a AIS box from Quark for just over £100 which would do the job but was wondering if there was an alternative solution. As the usb connection provides the power to the AIS unit I would need to keep that.

If you don't mind keeping the laptop on you could install Signal K and configure your laptop to become a wifi access point. You should be able to connect your tablet to the wifi access point and then the data will be there. I haven't done this personally but the documentation on the Signal K website is pretty good. Alternatively you could run Openplotter on a Raspberry PI and that will do what you want and replace the laptop.

I fitted one of these 6 years ago and has been perfect for linking my AIS receiver to my android tablet. Yakker
Excellent service and advice from the seller.
