Part of my Raymarine system on my Beneteau Swift trawler34 is an AIS receiver. I want to upgrade to a transmitter/receiver to be less dependent on radar. Is anyone aware of a bolt-on to my present receiver or do I need to discard my receiver and install a new transmitter/receiver box.
Thanks for any advice.

I have a Raymarine C120 being fed AIS and GPS data at hi speed port setting from a Matsutec combined AIS transceiver and Chartplotter HP1228A. I expect Raymarine offer a transceiver but having an extra plotter provides other benefits of spare equipment in case of gear failure.

Why not call Raymarine direct and get the true facts rather than complicate things with third party add-ons.

I have always found them very helpful.

I did phone them and they told me it was not possible. Speaking to a lot of other boat owners after that call I find that this is not correct. The forum, as always, seems to be a better source of information.

On our last boat we added a digital yacht unit to our Garmin plotter and it worked fine . Don't know the OP location but DY might also help on any installation queries etc.

I would say there is no add on and you need a new unit. I can't see any need to use a Raymarine one..it is a little easier if you get one with wifi simply because you then have an app from your phone for updates etc. Digiyacht and vesper marine and maybe comar..usually all about the same price but you might find a deal around boat show time

I have a Raymarine ais650 but a friend has an em-trak which cost less but seems robust and does the same job. If you already have a receiver it should be easy to swap to the transceiver .
The raymarine ais comes with its gps antenna . Not sure about the em-trak.

Im using this one, simple and very effective. I think it is the cheapest transponder on the market (partly the reason im using it). Works a treat really

It's not the cheapest on the market at £399, there is a Matsutec here for £245

Or another one with a screen here for £329

If you buy a transponder ,your current receiver will probably become redundant and can be disconnected as most transponders on the market I have seen also have built in receivers. Just make sure that the model you buy is NMEA 2000 compliant and it’s will be easy to network into your Raymarine ‘seatalk’ system by a single cable adapter.

To be an authentic transponder / transceiver (not sure which is the correct term, but I am sure someone will be along shortly to explain) the AIS must have its own GPS receiver within its own electronics.

The only drawback of the Matsutec range is that they are not NMEA2k.

im looking to buy a class B transponder. ive heard the Matsutec ones are unreliable and im sure i read that vessels using them were getting stopped by the dutch authorities because they were jamming the AIS frequencies with pointless data. i think they said it was transmitting every second even though the vessels are stationary.
the quark-elec one looks good, ive already got the QK-A026 and its amazing with WiFi so ill probably give them a go. i will report back.

Where did you hear that ? All comments on here and PBO forum about Matsutec have been very positive. I would highly recommend Matsutec.

If you are going to offer up a negative comment like this you should really back it up.

Any AIS transceiver will continue to transmit data if it is left turned on - try a run down the Hamble and count just how many active AIS targets there are from the marinas and yards - can't all be Matsutec !

Once you have the transponder, you maybe will not touch receiver any more. Some transponder have a mute option which allows people decide to broadcast own information or keep quite.
