Hi,
Trying to understand how I change the boat name that transmits from my AIS. Also I’d assume the AIS is registered to an owner.

Anyone know how I go about changing this?

Thanks.

Are you going to be doing sea work,!!!

AIS came with a CD but I guess these days its a download of software to a laptop. Then connect to the AIS with a cable and this should allow the boat name to be changed.
But it will not allow the mmsi to be changed unless the unit is returned to the manufacturer.
The AIS isn't registered to anyone as it is associated with the boat and not directly with the owner.

But you should register your details with
RYA SafeTrx

You don’t change the MMSI, that stays with the boat, but the unit will have to be reprogrammed with the vessel’s new name. Local electronics dealer can do this. What brand of equipment do you have?

You change the ownership of the MMSI and Callsign on the Ofcom website when you apply for the new ship’s radio licence.

Gotcha. Thats what I needed. I’ll organise to get the unit reprogrammed with new name, and apply for the ships license.
Thank you.

AIS units are usually designed so that the MMSI number cannot be easily reprogrammed by a user but the boat’s name can be.

A laptop and cable may be all it needs depending on the make and model of AIS. Have a look for ProAIS 2, downloadable from many AIS manufacturer’s websites.

To change the boat name you don't have to send it away, you can do it yourself. To change the MMSI you usually (not always) have to send it away. If it's em-trak i can do it for free if you send it to me, i'm an em-trak dealer. My software might work with Raymarine, as they are made by em-trak, would have to check.

I don’t know the make and the boat is 600 miles away! I’ll take a look this weekend. I suspect it’s Raymarine, as the vhf/mfd/radar is Raymarine.

I’m happy to wait as it’s not super important to me but just want everything setup and done properly.

According to the FCC website, it's an ITU requirement that you can't change the MMSI without the manufacturer's help.

If it's just a name change and the MMSI is correct for the boat and your VHF license it's a straight forward, 5 minute job. You just need the correct programming software and a USB cable, if it's Raymarine you need proAIS2.

My 'China Fantastic' Matsutec AIS Transponder allows you to change anything. Name, MMSI etc etc using a serial cable and Windows laptop. Fortunately has nothing to do with the boat owner etc. Just the boat.

When i bought my boat the local marine electrician updated the mmsi for me on the boat, no problem. This was a b&g NAIS-500
