The air filter on our Yanmar 3GM is badly corroded and needs replacing. We were quoted about £200 for a new one by the local Yanmar dealer. This seems a bit steep. Any ideas on a substitute which could be used. I have tried to get hold of a second hand one with no luck. Any ideas gratefully accepted.

Have you looked at the K&N car type filters? Very good they are and all kinds of specials for fitting to racing machines/kit cars etc.

yeh, i've seen a marinised ford escort engine with a K'n'N filter but that is a marinised engine. if you work out the aitflow through the carb then you could probably ring them up to see what they have for that kind of engine, marine or not.

On marine engines the intake filter is really only to reduce noise, there's not an awful amount of dust at sea.

You can quite happily run without it, fortunately a diesel doesn't change mixture if inlet pressure goes up.
My 2GM has the same (large) filter and Fenamec in France had no replacement cores available - it ran perfectly for a whole season until I could source one from A E Barrus here in the UK.
In future I shan't bother to change the centre when it develops a hole.

Worth looking at Pipercross and Ramair as well. They do various oddball filters.

Unbelievable price for such a basic unit. If yours is the same as mine it's just a pressed steel, vaguely conical shape with a bit of foam inside to act as a very rudimentary strainer. I would think that almost anything else that fits the manifold would be as good or better.

May not have been clear, it is the air filter cover which is needed not the foam liner. The metal is rusting & badly corroded in places although it does still seem to hold the filter itself in place. Can i take it that this is purely cosmetic & can leave it how it is?. Not sure if it will become a problem when we come to sell it.

G'day Lucier,

Had a similar problem a few years back, took the old filter housing into a local sheet metal shop and got one made up in stainless steel, not too expensive and still on the engine years later.

Hope this helps.

we don't have one on our lister.. I asked an engineer about it and he said was only really to dampen noise a bit. Said engine was fine and had probably run for years without one!

If its a gas engine you do need a flame arrester in the event of a backfire, unless your sailing the Red sea near the coast!! A diesel only needs some thing to keep the low flying sparrows and rocks, nuts, bolts, etc out of the engine. Unless the noise gets to you, as you age the noise lets you know you are still alive.

quite agree,
whatever you can find that will fit in the local breakers yard.
my vp2030 doesnt have one, the argument is that the air is that clean at sea that you dont need one, how ever am thinking of adapting one to cut down on intake air noise

Have a look at http://www.europaspares.com/ for they have a number of air filters in their catalogue including pan type that I have considered for my Volvo engine.
