There is a logical progression for lights and shapes. With one anomaly - motor vessels - the priority goes up as you add a shape or a light.

Sailing is the basic with none.
(Then motor)
Add one: fishing or trawling
Add one: constrained in passage

Add loads more and it's a minesweeper playing the bagpipes and towing a submarine!

I thought I knew a few signs, lights, buoys etc. Now I have read all those shortcuts, I am so confused I do not know any. .
I think that I will stick with -senior officers have curly alban hair etc. Which is pointless because apart from the tangent (for pitch for building stairs) I have not used it since leaving school.
So I am stuck with the only other useless one I can remember

For the novice - PORT is red is left
The drink is red
Four letters in port and left.

As for Cardinals
N & S speak for themselves top mark ponts up N down for S
East mark - You can draw an E through the cones pointing in opposite directions
