I am looking for info on present stae of situation in Algeria as I hope to sail from Morocco to Tunisia later this year. Any ideas where I could find it?
You can get the best news from French newspapers or press agencies. We are in France at the moment and Algeria crops up frequently in the news, usually because the country seems to be on the edge of civil war. We are thinking of heading for Tunisia, but I plan to avoid Algeria.
Algeria is just a NO GO!
No harbours except Oran, Algier, and Anaba which are commercial harbours.
There was a marina at Sidi Ferruch 15 nm. or so west of Algier, but it was completely neglected, and the entrance is now blocked by a sand bank.
The country is in complete anarchy, and very, very dangerous for foreigners.
I would not land there, even in an emergency!
Remember, the Balearics are only 180 nm. from Algier.
BTW, there is a very busy lane 20 - 40 nm. north of and parellel to the Algerian coast, try not to sail there either.
Morocco and Tunisia are fine, except maybe for too much bureaucracy, marinas are quite safe as well as the inland country.Algeria is a bit dangerous for europeans and the authorities themselves discourage visiting.I would wouldn't stop there.
I would agree completely that Algeria is a no-go country, but it is not in anarchy either.Having sailed to Egypt last November I did most of the Algeria coast inland of the shipping route you mention, but apart from some disregard for radio use there is nothing special , particularly dangerous or demanding.
