advice-gas struts

I can buy gas struts that ram outwards but need a couple that pull inward. (Does that make sense?) To put it another way I don't want the struts forcing themselves open (extending) all the time, I want them contracting (closing) pulling themselves shut. Can anyone advise me where I can purchase these?

Byron, don't be such a tight bugger. Buy the full hydraulic package and do the "radar up & down bit" at the touch of a button. Very Posh. Alternativly have a look in the RS Components book or web site or the Farnell site. Both sell struts at reasonable prices. If these no good do a search using one of the engineering engines for a strut company and go direct.

It isn't a question of being tight. There is no-where to put a hydraulics package short of taking head-linings down and doing drastic modifications whereas if we can find struts that pull in rather than ram out they will fit nicely out of sight inside the arch. It was RS who supplied the struts I have now and these are wrong.

camloc.com make struts. I don't think there's a pulling in one, otherwise it'd pull in all the time and yer wouldn't be able to open the whatever. But there are posh ones that hold the opening to a set position, instead of whooshing to fully open.

Wrong! It depends where the application of force is coming from, my application will be trying to force them open.

try this site www.indgassprings.com/main.html Follow the links to the product page. They do springs for both compression and tensile applications. even if they don't have exactly what you want they may be able to point you in the right direction.

Why not just use shock cord/elastic? What's the application anyway?

Just a thought - If you really can't find them, you can always turn the ones you bought, the other way round. ie point the ram away from the thing your closing and use an extension arm- which could in fact be a steel cable, as it is alway in tension-linking the end of the ram to the radar arch or whatever. Providing the gas strut does not have to pivot, then the cable say, could be run through an eye or small pulley at the fixed end.
