Roughly equidistant, I'd have thought - about an hour/hour and a quarter in each case - by public transport. Stansted is nearer in straight distance terms and doesn't involve going through Central London if you're driving. Any possibility of getting a flight in to London City Airport? That's more like 15 minutes.

Don't know for certain, but Excel is dead easy to get to via the tube & Docklands light railway so Heathrow can't be too difficult. It takes 30 mins + from Waterloo so upwards of an hour, probably. People last year said it was easy by car, both finding and parking, so if you've one available, Stansted may be similar in time and inconvenience. If you're flying from nearby, is City airport any use? You could walk from there.
If there's going to be more than one of you, I'd be inclined to go to stanstead, pick up a silly cheap rentacar and go straight to Excel by car. Make sure you don't try it at rush hour though!
Only go to London for work but would have thought it would be Stansted - train goes into LIverpool Street from where it is easier to get on the DLR which surely goes to Excel - could be competely wrong of course and am sure there will a cockney on to tell me so!!
Stansted a nicer airport to for domestic flights in my humble opinion unless you are getting into lounges
IMHO.....
Getting from Heathrow means going round the Southern side of M25 and there is a 2 year roadworks where they are widening the M25. And have to pay a quid each way in the Tunnel/on the bridge. I commuted from Staines (near H'row to Essex for nearly a year, average time 1:25 mins at 06:15 .Nasty.
OTOH, Stansted whizz down M11 round M25 3 junctions, in on the NEW A13, and Robert is your Fathers Brother. And the whole journey is in Essex!
On my old ZZR I made Dartford to Stansted in 18 minutes (33 miles Oops!) QED.
Trains work well into London, and buses too.

Probably Stansted, It is further from london but has a proper express overground train link straight in Liverpool St. From liverpool St Docklands is pretty easy on the DLR and underground.
Heathrow involves going right through central london on the underground and changing in the middle which is pretty unpleasent.
However if you have a chance then City is the best as it is about 100 yards from excel (albeit on the wrong side of the river!)
There is also a pretty good river boat service stopping at quite a few places on the embankment.
