Just reading my copy of the latest 'Lifeboat' magazine. There's an article about search and rescue round Shetland. It's illustrated by a picture of one of the emergency towing vessels, initiated after the wreck of the Braer. A big red tug, with "COASTGUARD" written on the side. But for a tug that's patrolling Scottish waters, I'm not sure that "Englishman" is quite appropriate as a name? And did it have to be registered in Nassau?

And, incidentally, the second tug, covering the Fair Isle Channel, is called "Anglian Sovereign"!

If I needed help from the coastguard, their boat could be called Saddam Hussein as far as
I was concerned, as long as it rescued me.

Englishman wasn't always registered in Nassau, because, that was the name Englander wanted, but it was taken, by that tug, so in 1971, she was lloyds registered at southampton, i think. Plus i agree with Pauline.

How come the waters off England are seen as British waters but those off Scotland are apparently deemed Scottish? The ships the tug is there to prevent running ashore are most likely from anywhere other than the UK so are very unlikely to notice let alone care!

The Englishman is owned by a Hull company with British crew - unlike our so called new flag ship - QM2 - which appeared to be crewed by quite a few from the Philippines!
The Englishman from 1971 was a different vessel owned by United Towing of Hull.
The Anglian vessels are owned by Klyne Towing of Lowestoft.
