Adding a hinged transom to an inflatable boat.

At the moment I need (still) an inflatable boat to act as a tender, however instead of going down the prices have gone up and I'm on a fairly limited budget at the moment.

I don't intend (ever) to purchase a petrol motor. Any motor purchased will be electric at best so much lighter and probably much slower. That means I don't need a full transom that you see on Zodiacs or some Avons. (Both of which are out of my price range anyway).

What I'd like to do is purchase a dinghy that doesn't yet have a hinged transom and then add one later, but I can't seem to find any tutorials on how to do this or any gadgets that would just act as a hook on the stern. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great.

For those that recall my efforts to go down the Tinker route were unfortunately not successful, I would love to do this, but budget does not allow at present.

I'll take a look into that.

I have found this item when looking at certain boats and recommended items.

I also found this thing: Intex Outboard Motor Mount Kit . Not sure how universal it is though.

You might be able to adapt that Intex bracket to another dinghy but if you are on a budget Intex are kind of half way between a "proper" dinghy/tender and a toy inflatable, so might not be a bad choice to get you started. Have a look for Intex on Youtube, a lot of vids on there of people making floors and mounting seats on them for fishing, e.g.

I'm think Bark myself, fortunately my needs are not high, it's basically about getting from the end of the jetty to my boat and back again relatively dry. ?.

Buy an Avon Redstart or Redcrest. Plenty about sub £250. I sold a Plastimo 260 in perfect condition for £150 last year. Really is not worth messing with outboards, either petrol or electric for short runs

I'd like to know where these are. Every time I've bid on one, they've gone for something around the 400 mark. Yes, used. Either that or they're falling to bits.

For example: Avon Red Crest is going for 450.00

A bit depends upon what tender you get.

If you got an avon, I and others could show you photos of the bracket that can then be DIY'd to hinge up.

Some people turn petrol strimmers into outboards, but you don't want petrol.

I have only seen or used one electric o/b; so light (yet performed ok) that simply having quick release catches and placing in boat may suffice?

I know a lot has changed in the last few years.

For me £ 450 for an avon is good news because I have two in perfect condition I no longer need.

I did not pay such a high sum for them.

The offer made by a previous poster for £100 is a bargain.

What is a hinged transom? Never heard of that on a tender/small dinghy.

And if budget is tight, an electric outboard is a very expensive way to travel. Nice if you any afford to splash the cash, but about 6x what I paid for a great Mercury 3.3hp two stroke outboard last year

Really cheap ones are available nowadays. As little as a couple hundred pounds new (if that). Getting an outboard engine for equivalent is much more expensive.

As for a hinged transom, I'm assuming (I don't know) it's a device that's fitted onto an otherwise all round inflatable dinghy and allows for the motor to be tilted out of the water.

I ended up doing very little of the above.

The Avon was much too far away for the seller to consider it seems. I have purchased a small 2.3 (2 man) Bestway dinghy. I'm probably going to regret that but at least I'll be able to get out to my boat.
