I got some acetone, and tried to clean a seat cover. Whoosh, brand spanking fab clean new-looking white seat. So, I got a massive bottle of the stuff and whammed it all over, with fabulous results. However, the bottle is in spanish, so might it say "don't put this on seat covers or it will rot them to bits?". I have so far established that it rips wood varnish off the floor, so that needs re-doing, but only in the bog.

Acetone will strip varnish faster than robbie williams stripping kylie minogue! Be careful with it! Dissolves just about anything, especially if left for a few minutes!

Re: Where can I get some?

This sounds just what I need! I've been stripping and sanding varnish for weeks, no hang on a minute that sounds disgusting. I've been using Nitromors but it has been leaving large amounts of varnish untouched. Would acetone be a better product to use and where could I buy it?

What material was the seat cover? Can you do this on most seat materials? Some of my seats are starting to look a bit grubby, I used a mild bleach but if acetone will get them like new I am off down the chandlers now.

You definitely do not want to use acetone, it's toxic and dangerous, used to be used as nailvarnish remover, not anymore thank god!

Re: acetone v bleach

I didn't find acetone in uk chandlers.

I did use bleach, and it's rubbish. First, it doesn't clean very well, second if you use loads, it get into the blimmin seat and wrecks everyones trousis or shorts, and later dissloves the stitching in the seat.

So, other than disolving varnish and nailvarnish, no problem! use bog paper and try it on a small area first. Then within 10 seconds and before bothering about waiting around, try it on a massive great big area.

Re: acetone v bleach

Thing with acetone is that it will also dissolve colours out of fabric.

Many years ago following a chemistry lesson at school where we dissolved chlorophyll (the green stuff in grass) with acetone, I had to remove a grass stain (don't ask) from a blue and while striped shirt. It did a lobvely job of getting shot of the green, It also got rid of the blue happily turning a large area of the shirt pale blue..

use 'truck wash', the industrial strength degreaser used in pressure washers. wipe it on neat, and wash off 30 secs later. Brings grubby vinyl up like new. NOTE: wear marigolds or your hands will look like something from 'the return of the mummy' later. (rips all the oil from your skin)

Re: acetone

I have used it on vinyl seats, also vinyl-covered plugs for making GRP moulds. It does a fast job of cleaning. But it seemed to dissolve the surface off the vinyl slightly, or at least pull out the colour. So use sparingly. If you are using it on white vinyl, try it with a dark coloured cloth to see if any white residue on the cloth. You can also get it from Glasplies in Southport, fast mail order (forgot the number, but in directory enquiries and Exch and Mart). I seem to remeber they had two grades, good stuff and manky reconstituted stuff. I always got the good stuff in the hope it was less carginogenic. Smells good too.

Health warning

Acetone has got me out of jail on a few occasions but you have to be pretty careful with it, health-wise and material-wise.

Marine trade still use it quite a lot for cleaning things up after build or rebuild. But it can be pretty aggressive on all sorts of surfaces. Will often take the surface texture off vinyl and the like and may leave some plastics perpetually sticky afterwards.

I agree use, truck wash it brought the dirt of my seat covers a treat, Acetone could remove plasicisers and harden materials. Incidently if you spill acetone flood it with water it will absorb it!

Acetone is dangerous stuff! Please be careful with it! Whjatecver you do with it, make sure the area is very well ventilated! If you actually read the safety sheet, which should be supplied with the stuff, it will frighten you!

Used it on my last boat to clean the area before doing some scratch repairs. For seat covers wouldnt it be best to put it on a cloth wait for it to evaporate slightly before using it therefore only using a damp acetone cloth rather than a soaked one?

Only 28 hours to go ;-)
