Absolute Beginner - Please help!

A word of warning

The guy on the boat next to you has a POWER DRILL and a SANDER and a PRESSURE WASHER and don't think you will have a nice lie in because he will probably ask you to give him a hand.

What a coincidence!

Hi Dave, what a coincidence! My real name's also Dave and I live in Somerset too! However, my surname is Thackwell, not Reynolds. I live at 39 Ashmead, in Yeovil, is this anywhere near you? I'm an aspiring comedy writer too - we're a funny lot in Somerset, aren't we? Maybe we should get together for a chat one day, give me a ring on 425846 and we'll fix something.

I was itching to pitch in with my normal "sod off you troll" type of post, but I always get ear-ache from the sympathetic forumites.

I may go with my feelings in the future.

Hello everybody,

I wanted to come back one more time to say that I am genuinely sorry that I wasted so many people's time. As I said in my confession post, this was never my intention.

With most of my other pranks people have realised that it’s just a joke quite early on in the thread and so give up replying after a while.

This particular "prank" of mine quite obviously didn’t go very well and I mostly put this down to my original post being too serious. I deliberately took out some of the jokes in my post as I had a feeling people would find me out too early and the prank would fail miserably. I think I may have taken out a few too many jokes and the seriousness of the replies I had reflects this.

It may not mean anything now but despite it being a big joke I did read all the replies and found them very interesting. I think if I ever decide that I want to propose on a boat it will be very useful information!

Once again I am sorry if I annoyed people - I can see that a lot of you when to a big effort to do what you thought was helping me out.

If you have seen my website you will know that not only did I not include a link to this forum but that I also changed everybody’s names on any of the replies I chose to use.

Thanks

Dave

The problem with schoolboy pranks like yours (commonly known as trolls) is that its difficult to differentiate between a dick head and a genuine beginner .Unfortunately some genuine new posters get tarred with the brush which should be reserved for tossers like you.

Dave

Personally I accept your contrite statement - the issue here is that in matters around boating the sublime adn the ridiculous go hand in hand and, overall (and in common with some other forums) people will invest time and effort to help - however ridiculous the apparent plea.

Overall you made a good write up of the thread, kept peoples names out and came clean quickly. However at the end of the day you were extracting effort from people under false pretences - the actual cost will inevitably be born by someone else later on who comes here needing advice and gets caught 'crying wolf' - that there name is Steve and they live in Caterham will be mere conincidences.

... and I thought spending weekends on end doubled up in the bilges of boat trying to route cables and pipes and spending untold amounts of cash for the priveledge of doing so was seen by some as a strange hobby - it all seems so normal compared to modern 'comedians'!

I smiled when I read your original post and the replies as I immediately thought Troll but you did leave the door open and you could have been genuine.

If you had logged onto this site a month ago you will have read a number of posts about a missing sailor. I think he is still missing and unfortunately we must assume the worse.

The majority on here get great pleasure out of sailing or being on the water but too often witness Mayday calls on the VHF due often to inexperience. There were many recent threads over the Ouzo incident where 3 people lost their lives and the accident report by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch made salutory reading for many and many including me have now made some alterations to our equipment or the way we sail following some excellent advice/comments on here.

I trust you are getting the flavour that there are many enthusiasts on this site that take the time to offer well meaning advice to others and especially beginners as they realise how unforgiving the sea is when we get it wrong.

Thank you for coming clean so soon and saying sorry a lot of people would not bother but hope you now better appreciate why it has angered so many people.

If you do ever fancy going sailing do give it a try, you will find the majority are tad more adventurous than normal people with a great sense of humour and they all quickly realised that all the best activities start with S... Sailing , Skiing and Sex - what more can a person want.

Steve- for a really romantic proposal just fly out to Australia and charter a boat in the Whitsundays.... you don't need certificates of competence, just demonstration of common sense or they will supply a skipper for a day if needed to get you going.
(I have absolutely no link with any charter group!!! Just an Aussie who had first real sailing experience 25 years ago through a charter and have been sailing ever since.)
You'll get all the sunsets you need and it is much cheaper, including airfares than buying a boat of your own.......... though I don't pretend you won't want your own boat after the experience!
My boat is now my weekender!!!! Though sometimes raced with some seriousness.

He has no copyright on the ybw content, as the copyright will reside with the forum when he signed up to post here. I'd suspect the same applies to the other forums he has used.

As far as comedy writing goes, he's pretty useless, and should take a look at some of the work that has been done on these forums when Jimi goes trolling on caravan sites etc /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

His comment on his forum about not naming forums etc is a load of rubbish, as you can search for many of them. RAC etc.

Shame that some forget when they cut & paste from other forums eh ??

It seems to me slightly odd that some people seem to be reacting quite so violently to this amusing (although not exactly side-splitting) joke...

If you are complaining about the wasted effort of 2mins typing, I'm surprised the exasperation of certain aspects of boating haven't killed you!

As soon as I read the confession I kicked myself, but did immediately smile. maybe self-deprecation is a quality in decline!

Don't include me in "disgruntled" for answering the guy ... I had a sneaking suspicion that it was a wind-up, but thought why not ... even if it is - what harm to take the bait !!

My bit in reply to Brendan was about copyright and someones disregard of it not so long ago ...

The way I read the the YBW (IPC) rules is that you can re-post material elsewhere (non-commercially), unless by doing so you assign rights to the new host. That is if you were a member of a forum which claimed all rights in anything you post. But that would be an Unfair Contract in English Law and would be un-enforceable.
I seem to remember IPC themsleves tried that with contributors' copyright in the early '90s (as did IMAP and others) You had to endorse your payment cheque on the back before it would clear and the endorsement accepted a transfer of copyright.

2. Licence to Use Material on Web Site
2.1 IPC grants to you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, royalty-free licence to use all the material on the Web Site (including but not limited to: software, documentation, text, pictures, sounds, graphics, articles, video or audio clips, and advertising material) (‘IPC Material’) on the basis set out in Clause 2.2.

2.2 You are entitled to access, download and transmit (for the purposes expressly permitted in these User Terms) and store the IPC Material for your own personal, non-commercial use provided that you do not:

• remove any notices relating to the ownership of copyright or other Intellectual Property Rights (as defined in Clause 3.1 below) in the IPC Material;

• modify, translate, reverse engineer, reproduce, decompile, disassemble (except as expressly permitted by law) or create derivative works of any of the IPC Material;

• rent, lease, sub-licence, loan, copy or give or transfer any rights in the IPC Material in any form, to any person or entity without the prior written consent of IPC.

It's not the wasted couple of minutes that does the damage in my opinion. I was away when this post went up - otherwise I might have been tempted to reply. By the time I got back, he still hadn't "'fessed-up" but it was starting to look a bit fishy.

As I see it, the real damage is that future genuine posters will be more likely to get a rougher ride in the future. Over the years I've been on here, I've found an increasing number of posters (some very well informed, it has to be said, but maybe a bit short on patience) who have been too willing to jump down someone's throat or kill them stone dead with accusations of trolling. I think this makes the forum less welcoming for novices and that's a shame. Wind-ups like this will only serve to make everyone more cynical when reading a strange-sounding request for advice for the first time.
