On a Mazda RX8 !

I've been trying to avoid a Mazda showroom ever since I saw the RX8 on Top Gear, 'cos I knew I'd be tempted!

Needless to say I ended up in one yesterday, and they really do have useful rear seats, and that red leather..........!

Come on someone, tell me how crap they are, and how the wankel will go wonky 3 weeks out of warranty!

Then I'll still have the funds next SBS/LBS to start looking!!

Help..........!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that's a good idea!

Bet I'd only loose a grand or so, well worth it for all that fun!

Now I really am talking myself into it!

...how about...

- having to check that oil reservoir every second fill up
- having limited pull at low revs
- the narrow boot access
- the claustrophobic cabin

- but, the looks, that engine, that rev limit (9000), the handling, seeing the wheelarches out of the windscreen...

I would be seriously tempted. And I am.

You sod, you reminded me about that letter box of an excuse for a boot!

Not to mention the can of finnylek type stuff in lieue of a spare.

And what's this about checking oil levels, it's not a two stroke is it?

Never mind, it'll be ok when I've swapped it for a 1.7 diesel mercruiser!

The cabin didn't seem too bad, much airier than a TT.

...no, not a two stroke, but there's no sump, and the oil is constantly fed from a reservoir into key bits of the engine. You check it every second fill up, or things get warm and scratchy inside.

"much airier than a TT"

How much air is there in a coffin?

The RX-8 is perfect - go for it!

I have the brochure here, if you like the car then get it, the middle page is a 4 x A4 picture of it in Red yum-yum.....
Also it says oil capacity 6.7Litres for both engines so it does have a sump. But some is used as a total loss system, hence checking it every second fill.
They do an 1/18 scale model for 29.99 which I suppose might be enough....

Residuals are a little iffy at the moment. Dealers still have a reasonable stock of them as demand isn't the strongest. I've a client that wanted to change after 3 months and we had problems finding a dealer to take it in. For a car 3-6 months old, you're looking at a drop of £3-4k off list for trade price by a dealer. Don't put it through as a company car, both engines have the highest CO2 rating.

Apart from that, have fun on the red leather seats!! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Martin,

My neighbour bought an RX8 for his wife - they absolutely love it. Early problems with oil seals on rotary engines have been sorted, so you should have no problems - the interior is, as you say, BRIGHT!! . Our neighbour on the other side has just bought his wife a Nissan 350R, similar car in terms of marketplace. I drove it the other day, and it was bloody horrible. The ride was appallingly stiff, the transmission jerky and agricultural, and the engine not that great either. You definitley got the right one. My wife has a new Vectra, and I am definitley NOT going to keep up with the Jones's on this one!!

SWMBO has one,and it is a great car (but watch your license)
3000 miles in 2 months and half litre of oil used (check every 1000 miles seems OK) The oil is used to lubricate the tips.
Spare wheel is available if ordered with car.
Regards cabin. I am 6'-4" and can drive it without my head touching the roof.
Only down side is fuel economy (about 20mpg around town and 23mpg on run)

This is meant to be a Boat forum, everyone should be saying NO dont do it, you will miss all those time spent on the boat and generally messing about on the water........not what a good car an RX8

IMHO I could never buy a car that you have to check the oil every 2nd fill up or 1000 miles, for a car costing this much it is just not acceptable

never mind the oil situation nobody over 30 should be thinking about buying these little sporty things! You end up becoming part of the Jeremy Clarkson syndrome over aged men in leather jackets and jeans driving cars that make them look rather silly, all IMHO.

dont know the RX8, it might be a good car but a boat, any boat is better!!

Well said Jim!

You'd think more forumites would recognise a fellow memeber going through a weak spell, and rally round to protect the cause.

Trouble is I spose that most stinkpotties are also big bike/fast car freaks.

Still think Adrian has the best idea, but now I've been informed that residuals are getting bad, and I could lose a few grand!

I better hold out until I get to go one the Sealine 360 (or is it the big Fairline Clive?) at SunCoast next month, and re-focus (and that's not the ST170!). my loyalties!
