About this diesel pre-filter

Important thing is to be sure to replace all three of the O rings, don't be tempted to leave old ones in place.

And make sure they're sitting squarely and correctly in their places. Twice I've had to undo the whole thing and start again because its been leaking. The first time I didn't notice and emptied a whole tank of diesel into my engine bilge. (Probably doesn't help that the CAV filter in my engine bay is slightly difficult to reach. Easy to see, but hard to get both hands to...)

The whole tank of diesel got siphoned out and put into the tank of my car... fortunately it was white tax paid diesel at the time. (That helped when I saw a police officer friend wince when I told him what had happened and what I'd done.)

Actually there are four o-rings, there is an additional very tiny one about 5-6mm dia which goes just below the head of the central bolt. The OP shows a Fleetguard FF167A cartridge, they come with the four o rings.

Yes, my bad counting. One on the bolt, one on the spigot and the other two top and bottom of the filter.

Unless it was a glass bowl, then there would be five :)

Additional thread drift: the priming bolt, the one which is eccentrical on the filter head, has a metal washer; mine is rather worn, can I replace it with a common stainless steel washer or has it to be the sort of malleable copper used for injectors?
Or maybe I could add another oring?

Best bet would be a copper washer.

Perhaps this should be a new thread. I'm planning to switch over to the ASAP spinon/off replacement kit at the next service. is there a downside to this?

I fitted a Baldwin BF790 like your picture, and bleeding aside it's literally a few seconds job to change it. My glass bowl is a separate unit between the tank and filter.

Over the winter the CAV primary filter has been replaced with a top loading one and the location moved to somewhere that is easy to access. Long gone are the days I could work upside down at a silly angle.
