Sailing around Tremadog bay is great with many places within easy reach on a weekend sail. I am in Pwllheli this year, was in Porthmadog last year. You never get used to the dolphins swiming along side, it is tremendous.

Where are you coming from, I am a little worried about holiday traffic on the A55 this year, I used to go the country route to Porthmadog and missed it all.

How much are the fees at Abersoch just out of interest?

Found a good site <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.abersoch.co.uk/>Here</A>

Nice place, lovely beach, good club.

But really only a summer anchorage.

5 boats got total losses when they had a NE about 12 years ago, and the insurance companies stopped underwriting any boats moored there.

Before you commit I'd suggest checking your insurers attitude, Right now with the industry in the state it is they'll try any dodge to repudiate a claim.

It was that storm which made Pwllheli so popular.

Road access is difficult - I used to come across the Berwyns but had an armed truce with the unmarked patrols on the A4212, Bala to Trawsfynnd, which had them promising to get me next time.

In the end I took to using the Cambrian coast railway - with a season ticket and a bit of careful planning (especially tides) it was quite successful.

Tremadoc Bay is a good sailing area - usually very well sheltered with a fair number of day-sailing goals and a 16 hour run down past Tuskar to the south Irish coast and all the cruising grounds round to Galway.

the moorings at Abersoch are very open to swell. Unless you have a house locally and you dont sleep on your boat on the mooring I dont think Abersoch is viable for people like me that live aboard every weekend in the summer. It is also a hell of a long row from the beach back to your boat in the evening when the sailing club launch is not running. A tad dangerous at night when the weather is not good too.

I keep my boat on the pile moorings in Pwllheli harbour. Deep water access and excellent shelter from storms and less than half the price of the marina

Yes, I was about to post the same. I have anchored many times in Abersoch Bay and never had a peaceful night's sleep. Water is too shallow to get right in under the headland to W, everywhere else seems to attract chop. The last time I ever tried was a perfect evening, not a breath of wind and the sea like a mirror. We anchored in a quiet spot near the east beach and went to bed. At about midnight some swells about 2 ft high began to arrive from Harlech direction, despite total absence of wind. We put up with this for about half an hour, no change, so gave up and motored to Pwllheli.

My boat was kept on the piles at Pwllheli before I bought it. Seemed like an excellent compromise. Are there any berths available still?

There are no permanent berths available at Pwllheli. The waiting list is in 3 figures and it looks like it will take years to get a berth at the current turnaround rates. The best hope for getting in is when Beaumaris marina opens, as some people (like me) will probably move there. That's not until 2005 though.

I think there are trot moorings available, call the harbour master, quite reasonably priced too, there are definately trots available in Porthmadog too.

It's unbelieveable, isn't it. When the Pwllheli marina was first built they hired a dredger to open out the part currently used, plus the channel. This is probably less than a quarter of the whole harbour area. Just as the dredger finished its work there was a very stormy period, with the result that the dredger was unable to move on. The owners offered to dredge the whole harbour if the owners (Pwllheli Council) would pay operating costs. The figure I have in mind was 60,000 pounds, a fraction of the amount spent on the part that was dredged. The council turned it down on environmental grounds! Bet they regret it now.

If you can understand the logic of thinking in that neck of the woods then you deserve to be PM.

There is no shortage of people wanting to invest in the area but no chance of change.

They hav had a mini dredger in the marina since December and it has moved about 75 metres, money runs out in March, mystery as to what they hope to achieve, especially as it is dredging the area used by shallow draft mooring area.

I heard a story that the council bought their own dredger from Florida and the first time the legs went down they buckled because the dredger was designed for use in the non-tidal everglades.

Logic down there is. If they modernise anything, or let the Engish in, we will pinch there trade and jobs. So there are no facilities or shops on the marina. (Not allowed). All the decent pubs are run by people with English accents though, so the policy seems to fail miserably......./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Agree with others. Abersock is no place to keep a boat permenatly. Less in the inner Harbour on the dry. But the tide is only in for a very short time and would be dangerous to enter in any sort of sea.

"Near to everything" Well. If you mean, nearer to the British Legion. Licenced till twelve, closes at eleven when they nick your glasses, full or empty. Or you can hike to the Victoria and stand for the welsh national anthem. I did not know the tune so got black looks....../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Then, course, you have to drive round every roundabout twice, trying to read all the place names, half of them in Welsh. Road works are a night mare with so many instructions in both Welsh and English, you have not a clue what your supposed to be doing. Strange. When you get to the green grocers. It just says Potatoes or tomatoes. So they cant be as thick as they make out!! This stinkie escaped..../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

agreed, somewhere to walk to; to get milk, bread and a paper would be nice, but alas you have to drive upto the Coop and then find somewhere to park. Just got back from a pleasant weekend, cold though. Had Ebers on full blast so cosy 23-24 C inside, down to 2 C last night.

Would also be nice if occassionally someone would come down and sell fuel too, heater tank is getting a little low /forums/images/icons/frown.gif
