Abbreviated URLs - How?

Do you mean like this: wcc

If you REALLY want it shorter, as distinct from looking shorter, I think you will have to change your URL, or get a shorter one and redirect. I think all the short nice ones have gone though.

When you press 'reply' to a poster, just below right of the text box there's a box with a load of tags in such as 'URL' and 'Email'

Click on URL and a box will pop up

Insert the URL and press enter

then in the second box that will appear type the word e.g. 'here'

Hope that's alright /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

(url=link) title (/url) = Makes the given title into a hyperlink pointing to link.

Replace the rounded brackets above by square ones (can't do this myself, as they would disappear). Replace "link" by the URL you target, and "title" by "here" or anything you fancy.

It actully looks like this in the post as you are composing it
url.JPG

if I have attached the image right!

When you post a new thread, you get a choice of Instant Mark-ups. Choose the one called URL, which will bring up a box. Type in the URL eg www.bbc.co.uk and press OK. This will bring up another box, into which you type whatever short phrase or word eg Here. Press OK. Tick the preview check box to preview your post to see whether you like what you've got. Then press Submit.

To do the same when answering a post, first press the Reply OR Quote buttons, to get the Instant Mark-ups, and continue as before. You wont get the IMups if you press Quick Reply.

On forums I prefer it if people just put a clickable http-thing,as it gives me a chance to look at it and decide whether I want to go there.

I'm with colmce. Better be transparent and not shorten. In the extreme case you could make the visible part look like a link to a newspaper and the link part go to the Daily Mail.

Duh! If you hover over This you will see the URL in the bottom left of the window (Just above the Start Button if you're on XP)
As in this instance you will see it is obviously a trustworthy site to visit.

Or, as I have just found out by experimentation, if you put your cursor over "this" and then right click your mouse, you get a drop down box. At the bottom, "properties" just left click to get the full URL.

Personally I prefer either a description in the preceding text like:
See Susy's blog HERE
or the description to be the clickable phrase like:
To see some good photos of a Foxcub look at LakeSailor's website .

It is true that an unexpected website could be hidden that way but as the Lake Sailor himself points out you can see the url in the bottom bar, whatever it's called.

Btw am I correct in saying that the Instant Mark-up is not offered for an "quick reply"? I've turned that off as people get upset sometimes when (instant) replies really refer to an earlier post in a thread.

Thank you all who replied! I learned more than expected; always a pleasure. Appreciate also, the comments re 'hiding' the nature of the shortened link. I'll take that on board.
Cheers!
