I need to replace the flares this year as the old ones went out of date last year. Looking at the ads in the mags I've been buying, someone pick Kim up and put him back in his chair, there seems to be a bit of a variation as to what you get in what pack.

The various options seem to be Inshore, Coastal and offshore packs. Now seeing as I need to replace the lot I thought I'b be better off buying a coastal pack. There seems to be a difference between the different makers as to what you get. Some have flaoting smokes while others have handheld. etc etc.

On the boat I normally have 2 HH reds 2 parachute reds and 2 orange smoke (floating) and a white HH, dunno why I've got a white one but I have!

So, on a small boat that is mainly used coast hoping what should be carried? Have I been over the top or a bit of a knumbnut for not having what I should!
Thoughts............

Barry, My boat's about the same size as yours and I bought a coastal pack (2 smokes, 2 handheld and 2 parachute), which seemed about right to me - on the basis that one or other of the flare types would fit all the disaster scenarios/requirements that I could imagine.

When they get invented I will, however, be buying several packs of "help-we've-run-out-of-beer" flares.

If you've got the space, do what I did, and keep the old pack on board. They are almost certainly going to work anyway, and you have double the number if anything does go wrong.

My girlfriend has been changing my flares with some from Makro. I have complained about there being no creases down the front. Not sure whether creases are suitable for inshore or offshore use.

I also have some more flares in a box on the boat, I bought them about five years ago but have not opened them yet. It seems to me that letting off fire works on a boat could be highly dangerous.Ever seen the film. Dead Calm!!../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

It has always intrigued me as to why the further away out to sea one gets, where there is no one to see them, why most authorities say you need more parachute flares. I would have thought more when close to land and busy waters would be the way.

Must be a reason?

The longer they stay up and burn, the easier for a any one spot you. With hardly anyone around, you need as many as possible.

Close to land, coastguard will probably get a number of calls from land phones from one flare.
