A scary leak

The OP does not elucidate but I will be surprised if the broken hose isn't rock hard and well past due replacement; inspection of hoses for condition & retention of flexibility is routine maintenance.
Quite the opposite. It actually needs to be bendable to feed though the route to the filter. It still is.
I am going to use reinforced hose and make sure it copes with the suction. Unless the hull inlet becomes blocked (in which case it becomes irrelevant anyway) the suction should be minimal.
If I haven't ditched it, I will take a photo and post here.
Fortunately, I have spare hose on the boat. But, what emergency spares should you carry? A few days out of sight of land and something fails……………………

Do you have any concrete evidence of this? First whether boats have sink because a seacock was left open AND insurers unwilling to pay out? There is nothing in the terms and conditions of any insurance contract that I have seen that requires seacocks to be closed on unattended boats.
Ah beat me to it ....... iv just had a quick check through my policy and no ..... no mention about closing seacocks or any other openings for that matter . Talking about seacocks what about cockpit drains ? To shut or leave open when on mooring ?

No doubt spare lengths of suitable hose would be appreciated to keep a cruise on track and make a ‘full’ repair where needed. But there are perhaps easier ways to address a leaking hose at sea - such as amalgamating tape, a bit of rubber and some hose clamps, another hose cut open to sleeve the damage, etc. (or if it isn’t a raw water intake or cockpit drain, closing the sea cock).

When we cruised SE Asia 20+ years ago the only time the boat (Hylas 44) nearly sank was when an unsuspecting crew member put some hot oil down the sink drain and an hour or several later the floorboards were under water. Finding the culprit was the main challenge/stressor - with much relief when the valve could just be closed and the chaos sorted out.
