So you are motoring at 5 knots in a buoyed channel, There are 3 of you in line , I am approaching from the stern , I am doing say 20 knots. What would you expect me to do.

Not certain it is a question specifically for "raggies". You are approaching 3 vessels under power (presumable displacement, but still under power). Are they being inconsiderate and motoring in the channel line abreast or are they crossing at an angle? You mentioned approaching from astern and I imagine all 4 vessels are travelling up or down the channel. This makes you the overtaking vessel. What do you plan to do?

At 20 knots I would expect you to give us a wide berth when overtaking, at least a cable/200yds/0.1 nautical mile.

If there isn't the space in that channel for that, I would expect you to slow down considerably before overtaking, to reduce the impact of your wash, but only overtake if there was safe space to do so, and at a speed which took you 20 secs or so to overtake each of us, that would be around 7 knots.

If there was no immediate opportunity to safely overtake, I would expect you to slow right down or stop altogether as necessary to maintain progress at an average rate of our 5 knots.

I think that's what I'd like you to do. In practice I'd probably be more concerned about what the hell you thought you were doing heading up our stern at that speed and be seriously worried about the impact of your wash on whatever we were doing at the time. I might be standing on our coach roof furling the mainsail and very vulnerable to being tossed over the side. Others might be down below making tea or preparing a meal for our arrival in port, the helm would be concerned about how to best steer along your wash to minimise its impact on everybody on board.

Basically until you'd slowed down it would be a very worrying moment.

a. Read Colregs and any local rules. Is there a speed limit or no-wake rule? Since you are overtaking, you must keep clear and not create a hazard.
b. If you were in a slow moving boat, similar in size to the sailboats, what would you expect? The golden rule always applies. Waking people is never nice.
c. Moderating speed usually means going no-wake speed. What you should NOT do is drop off plane to max-wake speed. Doesn't help.
d. Slow early (your wake follows you) and accelerate as you pass the last boat.

Much depends on the width of the channel, but as a rule, don't be impatient. Even sailboats often slow down in channels; they could go faster, but they don't because they shouldn't. It's not a motorway.

You thought calling them "raggies" would help?

Instead, you fixed their impression that you are a powerboater with little understanding of the navigation rules... which is all we have come to expect.

Read COLREGS, start to finish.
I will try ,do we drive on the left or right , I take it’s the same as roads.

Fair point, ok so this happened 3 boats motoring 150 metres apart following each other in a chop , I go past number 1, at 20 knots , he gives me mobo sign , so I slowdown to 10 knots pushing a great wake past number 2 , who gives me the mobo sign and being I am a planing boat it make very Rocky for our boat at displacement speed , what do I do for the third boat.
