A long way to go for a pint and a dram

I am currently planning the 2023 summer trip from Cornwall to home waters in Scotland.

Has anybody been to the The Old Forge on Knoydart since it was returned to local ownership? If so, was the beer any good. I prefer my brew not to be 'Ice Cold in Alex'.

I last visited the pub as a spotty faced 21 year old. After a long, hot, day's walk from the head of Loch Arkaig and feel after 40 years a return visit was in order.

Well you will have to go there to find out
Watch out for the midges which are world class there.

To be honest, IMHO there are much nicer places to go (particularly in the Outer Hebrides), but The Old Forge does seem to be a must visit on the list of trippers from down south.

Being brought up in Fort William and misspending my youth on the local mountains I know the ravenous appetite of West Highland midges too well.

Sadly, I am on a tight 60 day schedule otherwise I would be heading out to the Outer Hebrides, but want to visit the new pontoons at Corpach and have a school friend coming over from Australia that I've not seen in a long time - any excuse for get together.

@Sandy - I'm always pleased to make the acquaintance of anyone who's been to the most remote pubs in Britain.

Are there extra points for anyone who ever visited the Puff Inn on Hirta?

I never got that far North West, so I cannot claim any great fame. Except perhaps (about 50 years ago) sailing a dingy to and from the Turf Pub near Exminster. Strangely the sail home after visiting the pub always took a lot longer (and went further) than the sail to get there. Or (about 30 years ago) the Seven Stones Inn on St.Martin, with a meal at the delightfully-named Sir Cloudesley Shovell Restaurant. But the Fraggle Rock Bar on Bryher might get me points for one of the furthest South West.

IIRC the very furthest is the Turks Head on St.Agnes?

I know the Turf well. As I kept a boat on the Exe for several years, but now on the Tamar.

I proposed to my now wife a long long time ago in Hirta. There was quite a do in the Puff Inn, and the Army even made a cake for us. 🎂💞
