Because they can charge that much.
I'm thinking of getting a regulator for Calor and changing suplier, I'll need to see if the bottle fits in the locker first but it looks as though it will.

If you have a fixed 30mb regulator like the Gaslow, you can tail it with a calor hose suitable for norma calor gas bottles, or add a camping gas converter and connect to camping gasbottles.

I filled two 907 cannisters from a large Calor bottle a few days ago. It cost a lot less then £48. Probably around £6 or £7.

I appreciate that not all boats can accomodate a larger bottle and you're committed to sticking with Gamping Gaz.

My boat's gas locker can only accommodate Camping Gaz. I ran new pipework and have a Calor bottle hanging in a rope cradle on the pushpit. The ventilation meets all requirements.

I didn't have space for the propane bottle, but 4.5Kg Calor Butane bottles occupy a similar space. Much cheaper, last ages!
(I keep a cheap ebay electronic luggage balance on board to check remaining gas weight ... think about bringing the spare bottle once I'm down to 500g of gas )

We refilled one of our 907's at the local Intermarche for €24. Ouch!
Then we realised the Bricomarche next door (and from the same company!) does them for €21. Grr!

So for a switch to Calor butane its just a regulator switch. ?
I take it most of the modern ovens (say last 10 years) would be happy with butane or propane. ?
Almost worth carrying a selection of regulators on board.

That sounds like Continente if you can find a store with them in stock, many shops charge a lot more, up to 25 euro

12Kg Propane 14 Euro.
904 1.8Kg Butane 15 Euro.
So glad I use Propane
Polish chap I was talking to recently purchased 13Kg Propane in Dover for £36.
Used to get approx 4 months usage on UK 13Kg Propane. Not changed our consumption and so far the 12Kg
purchased here has lasted nearly 6 months. Guess its just a higher calorific content than the carp they flog
in rip-off UK.

1/ you charge what the market will bear and the UK is richer than portugal
2/ resale price maintenance helps keep prices up and the OFT is as much use as a chocolate poker
Do what I do - buy the kit to transfer from a big calor bottle into small camping gas ones. cheap and easy and provided you are sensible its safe too.
