Brave man - have you given it the statutory couple of days in a bin covered with waterproofing agent? Supposed to increase the life quite a bit. Hope you have some help to fit it, I believe you need about 8 hands

All the best

Hi Stuart, I know another Hardy Mariner owner who has just fitted one, took him 4 hours and he said not that bad a job. Not putting my rope in anything, if it lasts another 12 years untreated it's replacement will be down to someone else. I will let you know how I get on.

Fine as fender.Nightmare as mooring warp.
When soaked with water would freeze solid round a lighter bollard. Impossible to shift .

A friend of mine wants a rope fendering for a barge , who makes it up ?

I got this made but the Chatham ropery, they are a charity based at chathams historic dockyard. They do have a website. My fendering, as can be seen on the pic, has a wire core which I have reused from my old one which I had to send them to work into the centre somehow. Your friend may require a wire core but that can obviously be made up by any riggers. You do really need to know what you want and instruct them. There are other company may be able to give more guidence for him.

Coir (coconut fibre) is never normally intended as a warp as it has pretty much zero strength in tension. There are applications for coir for use with hurricane springs, I doubt if there are many instances on the Medway........

Coir does soak up water and the actual use of it as a fender is in many ways a bit daft. The old one was wet when I removed it and must have weighed close to 100kg. Certainly no good for mooring lines, its coconut for goodness sake:D

Clever idea. If you'll excuse a few parochial questions - how did you get the old wire core out of the fender and what was the brief you gave the ropemakers, was a photo and the core enough? - and of course - if you dont mind me asking, what did it cost - I imagine quite a saving over what Hardy would charge even with the cost of sendig the core to Chatham. Did you have it freighted back to you or was it a family trip to the historic dockyard masquerading as a rope collection?

Anyway - hope the fitting goes well

Stuart, will pm with finer details, but a few pics may explain more:

Rope now off boat
IMAGE_1541.jpg

Stripping wire core out of heavy wet 85mm diameter coir rope fender… hard work
IMAGE_1547.jpg

I did first off leave a section of the fender on the wire core, but did remove before sending to chathams
IMAGE_1550.jpg

Sent wire core to chathams with order. I specified 72mm coir which with the wire core would have bought it up to between 80mm and 85mm which is what is required on the mariner 26. However unfortunately first off chathams made a 64mm coir by mistake as apparently that is "normally" what they make, so obviously they don't make many mariner fenders, but smaller pilot or the older 25. It was such a shame as they are a charitable organisation.

Anyway they send at a cost of around £30 so did not go and visit Chatham dockyard- but certainly will be going as would be a nice day out.

And now due to your comment about waterproofing I spent 2 hours pumping 5 liters of waterproofing liquid over the rope fender having unwrapped it, much to our dogs interest!

Glad you put the finished item up for all to see.

Absolutely Lovely. Worth all the effort, time and cost.

Great Job!

RR

Ps. Love the 'Windex' on the bow, perhaps there's a cat sailor hidden in there somewhere.

Thanks Roger...I like to know where the wind is coming from, it must be a sailor thing! But I find so useful when mooring up to know where its going to push me! ........and as such...yes there probably is a cat sailor in me!
