Adrian I believe this idea is to reduce/eliminate galvanic action in the tanks, which, being aluminium can be very susceptible.
I have plastic tanks on my P34; one outboard of each engine, 350 litres each.
I wouldn't have thought that there could be much in the way of galvanic reaction if the sender was properly insulated and the duration the ignition is on is short anyway, but it's an interesting thought.
