Not wishing to be too negative but it is difficult to understand how a new lifting bridge is going to significantly assist with traffic congestion. As far as I am aware the old bridge will continue to operate therefore two bridges will have to be lifted to let yachts pass from and to Cobbs Quay. Is this correct or have I got it wrong?
On the positive side it looks good!
The new bridge is not about improving traffic flow. Thats just the window dressing.
It is all about property development on the Hamworthy side.
Lots of overpriced waterside flats and a few cafes for second home/weekenders.
The usual suspects will make lots of money out of the ratepayers/taxpayers investment. .
You've got it right.
One bridge will open and let boats into the holding area between the two bridges.
The first will close and then the second will open, letting the boats out of the holding area and boats going the other weay in.
Then the second bridge will close and the first will open letting those out.
If there wasn't room for all the boats in the holding area, the whole procedure will be repeated.
They plan to start April 2008 and take 20 months, whats the betting it'll take twice as long and goes way over budget?
The trouble with something that's been designed to look good rather than be practical is that it'll probably be plagued with teething problems.
The "sails" are very long, will they be able to operate it in high winds? and as the join in the road surface will be diagonal, how will it affect motorcyclists?

...and unlike the existing bridge, beacause of the daigonal split, onening only one side if maintenance/repair is needed on the other side, wont let any marine traffic through which is absolutely idiotic.
