Would anyone be able to give an estimate of the srevice life in operation hours of a 2GM20 Yanmar, assuming good servicing? The motors are used in a 38' catamaran.

The Thorensen Marine site in the states suggests a service life of around 8,000 hours for a small high speed diesel in a pleasure vessel - assuming it's maintained and used appropriately. I removed a single cylinder Yanmar (old SB12) last year with 3,500 hours on the dial that was using a lot of oil, but that may well have been a use / maintenance problem - engine was 27 years old!

I know of several people who've only got 2,000 hours or so from Yanmar / Volvo engines of less than 40 hp or so, but in most cases, I'd suggest they didn't get enough fresh fuel and lube oil, and they were run at way below required loads. One marina neighbour has just paid to have a complete overhaul on a 2 cyl fwc Volvo with only 900 hours since new - I did 3,000 on my swc Volvo and it was like new when sold.
