270ah DIY LiFePO4 build

Have any of you guys that built and installed lithium on your boat contacted your insurance company? I have heard a couple of stories about insurance being refused. No idea of the truth in it but companies that were mentioned were Admiral and Pantaneus. The lithium installation was said to be professionally done.

I heard that Topsail cancelled someone's insurance immediately on hearing of an LFP installation. I recently changed to GJW and, since they didn't require that information, I didn't offer it. I did think I might have problems at the next survey to get a renewal so I'm reassured by Greg's comment.

Hi,

I recently filled in the online contact us form but did not hear back.

I want to confirm that my insurance is not invalidated by fitting Lithium
Iron Phosphate (LifePO4) batteries.

Please could someone advise? I am assuming not, but wanted to check.

And their reply;

Hi Greg

There is no exclusion or restriction in your policy relating to batteries.

Topsail are a broker who seem to generally use Admiral as underwriters for boats up to about £200k. Above that they use Global. It was an OCC boat that was refused insurance (as far as I understand it). They were given 2 weeks notice to find another insurer. Pantaneus also refused them.

I thought this day would never come! Class-T fuses really do exist.

Thanks again Greg.

a small update to bring up the thread 8-)

T-class_NH2-class_FUSES.jpg

came back from Athens yesterday where I picked a 225A T-class fuse and the BlueSea housing. Compare that with the massive NH2 class fuse, a meter for scale.
Thought the T-class would be small, nah, it's 170mm long with the housing. Not particularly easy to squeeze somewhere, but at least it's protected and not in plain view ready for a spectacular short!

If anyone is in GR, Maratsinos has them in stock (see link a few posts above). Got the last housing though
ah, forgot, 120something euro for the set.

cheers

V.
