24v from 12v

My boat is all 12 volt from x3 domestics. I need to run something on 24v. What do i need to make a seperate 24v supply that won't mess up the 12v?
 
I buy lots of DC converters from ablemail electronics their 12/24/12 is fine for D4 heaters which require 8 amps at start up. You could certainly use one for up to 12 amps at start as that is only for a few minutes. Don't forget you will waste a little power inside the converter and ensure you switch off before the converter if leaving the unit for any time as there will be a small drain.

Why not install an extra battery or isn't there room on the boat? Of course you'll have to think about how you will charge it.

On my yacht that I am building I have 12/24/240V. Many things like macerator pumps, heavy bilge pumps and refrigeration compressors run better on 24V.
 
I considered doing the same as there were some good deals on Webasto heaters in 24v. I was strongly advised to stick to 12v and keep the system simple. Maybe they were trying to sell me parts to fix my old unit but heaters have so many parts to fall over, a transformer would just be one more in the chain and a cheap one would make me worry in terms of efficiency and fire. Maybe I'm paranoid.
 
For $100 you could add two small sealed lead acids and a 12 to 24V charger.
I know someone who has such a set up in a Landy, Webasto for the purpose of....
 
Try Adverc,we bought a charger12 to 24 v that was economical ,automatic ,cutting out when the 12v is to low,and so far very reliable .

I know about 12-24 step ups but would rather not waste the power. Isn't there a simple, cheap box of tricks that isolates the two systems, so i could wire it like this?

You could do that but then you have to find a way to charge the 4th battery isolated from batteries 1-3. That is not so hard either but would prob cost more than the UKP15 inverter and add complexity, not to mention wasting the capacity of the 4th battery when the heater is not on/striking.
 
We have one of these Bosch series to parallel switches

Essentially the two house batteriess are usually in parallel but this switches them to series to drive a 24v bow-thruster (so high current/short duration application) Seems to work OK but I've no idea how much it costs. It was fitted when we got the boat and I can't find a price on the web. David
