So what does this year hold in store I wonder.

My first job is to build a couple of 5m pontoons for the Stage I've acquired at Southwold.
I built the first over the Christmas break and the other will have to be built over weekends as we're back to work in the yard tomorrow.
I decided to go for stainless brackets and fastenings and accept the wood will need changing in 7 or 8 years.

The stage is right opposite the yard which is handy so I can keep an eye on the boat and easy to pop over and chill.
Once up and running anyone up to 43' with a ECF flag is more than welcome to raft up for a couple of nights for free.

Wish you all a very happy new year and hope we all have a great sailing year.

1st Job of the year - go for a cold sail tomorrow before I go back to work!

then - need to think about fridges and electronics - all on the agenda for boat show visit on wed next.

then - davits.

Should have added in my first post.

What are your first jobs of the year ??

I agree that your mooring offer is very generous. :encouragement:

Priority jobs :

Freshen up the interior woodwork. Loads of wood (Westerly Discus), mostly in good order apart from being a bit dull and faded.

Fit some guardrail gates, just waiting for a pair of brackets.

Revising the anchor roller/anchor fittings and make a retractable bowsprit for the cruising chute.

Finish interior varnish and polish. Repair badly varnished area. New galley worktop. New 12v DC panel. Loom all new wires.

Order diesel. Fill boat with diesel. Few weekend trips then a big trip to either France or Holland.

Oh an order more diesel. And a bit more.

First major job of the year is to to finish installing the holding tank, fit a new water tank (if I ever get the damn thing), get the hot water and shower installed

Then there's a fair few smaller jobs to do to get ready to do some decent (we hope) sailing this year after a quiet year last year

12 days in the spring pottering around locally getting used to the boat will start things off and that may well include a visit to Southwold :)

Then a three and a half week sojourn to the Solent is planned for July, looking forward to that one a lot

Followed by a possible flight out to the Med for a week in the autumn for a change of scenery

There you are. If you had a wooden boat, you could pop a new water tank in while you were making room for the new ribs. You have conveniently reminded me to make sure that the water tank can go back into place once the new ribs are in place! :encouragement: It should do but will that end rib intrude on the end of the tank?

Popping the new water tank in will be no problem. Getting it from the manufacturer is taking a good deal longer than expected :ambivalence:

Re-flowcoat the shower/heads, being sure to mix the damn stuff properly this time.

Did you know it will not cure fully if not mixed for at least ten minutes?

Been there for nearly a year now and ones feet still 'stick' to the shower tray if one does not keep shuffling about whilst showering (poss too much info, sorry). I tried to convince the missus it,was a safety feature so that she could shower in a seaway but I did not manage it.

This summer is a major birthday for me and I have a ten day leave booked to sail to southwold (realisation of a thirty year ambition, since sitting by the lifeboat station one summers evening watching a big cruiser coming in and fantasising about owning my own boat and doing the same) and back, taking in the Orwell Bridge (always wanted to sail under it) and maybe the Deben.

"Lots of anxious questions advanced warning"

Happy New Year one and all, let's hope it's a peaceful one

Steve

Repair the damage to the bottom of the keel occasioned when drying out at Lossiemouth last August as an unexpected swell caused the boat to pound on a unnoticed rock as she lifted off. Then fit inspection hatches to the life raft tray to access better the rear of the engine. Then go sailing!

Well No 1 on my list done... cold but sunny sail today on the Orwell - lunch at Pin Mill then back all the way to Shotley - OK not far but hey - I was sailing!

then discovered 2-3 new jobs to do...

zip on some canvas
port guardwire unravelling
suspect house battery...

It never ends...

Are you absolutely sure it was flowcoat and not gelcoat?
Yes you have to mix but 10 minutes is well over the top.
The other reason is it could be old flowcoat and the wax had settled or it has been subject to frost at some stage.
Flowcoat is gelcoat with added wax which during the cure raises to the surface. sealing the gelcoat from air allowing it to cure.
I have plenty of gel, wax etc here at the yard if you need.

That's a very kind offer, but I have a bottle now:-)

Deffo flocoat but may have been sitting on the shop shelf for years. Luckily it is too cold to do it now :-)

Which makes me think that with all the technology that we can go to the moon, or communicate around the world in a nanosecond, how come an oil filter change arrangement that can be done without dropping half the contents of the old one in the bilge? (Note to readers that us MAB owners don't have a lot of room around the engine to concoct some useful oil filter change 'process')

Sorry for the thread drift but what are those 2 ally landing craft type power boats for in the top right of the photo and who owns them.
They've been at SYH for years and I've never seen them used.
Just curious

PS Good luck with the refit

Nice wok Jav.

What an extremely generous offer, very ECF :encouragement:

Jav is much more generouser than me but never-the-less if any ECF member up to 40 foot long happens by Southwold and is flying an ensign or burgee of the Vatican Navy they are welcome to two free hours on our new pontoon. If any ECF member is bigger than 40 foot then they are either bragging or have elephantitis.
