I have a Mariner 2 stroke 2.5 outboard.

I need to buy some oil, can I use motorcycle 2 stroke oil or is outboard oil different stuff?

Thanks.

Great, thanks for your reply. Better safe than sorry.

I've seen reference to TCWII and TCW3, what should I be getting?

for a small low performence o/b it will make little difference especially if you use 50>1 mix as tohatsu ( makers of most small o/b ) recomend.
i use @ present "Carlube" 2 stroke motor cycle oil. Api TC.JASO F8

for m/cycles
chainsaws
2T engines
Outboards

Do not use in high performance BIA-TCW outboards

i rest my case

Not sure, to be honest. I think they're different viscosities and one will be best for your o/b. Do you have a manual? I have an old Mariner 2.0 and I think it uses TWC3 but I only buy oil for it every five or six years so I can't remember /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Someone who knows will be along shortly.

Yes 2 stroke outboard engine oil is what you should be using.

TCW3 is the latest specification.

The strict answer to the question TCW3 or TCW2 is TCW3 although TCW2 can be used in an engine produced when TCW2 was the current spec.

You'll find two grades of Quicksilver and other oils. The cheaper one "premium" will be adequate unless your environmental convictions force you to pay more for a fully synthetic oil.

However as Sailorman points out for a small low performance outboard almost any two-stroke oil will be quite adequate and most are sold as suitable for small outboards.

Oil for air cooled engines such as garden machinery and two stroke motor cycles etc is in fact a slightly higher viscosity than the oil for water cooled outboards, I guess reflecting the difference in operating temperature.

I recently bought a Ryobi strimmer - the instructions were very explicit about NOT using marine 2 stroke oil, so I guess the reverse is true.

Could it be that an air cooled 2 stroke runs a lot hotter than a water cooled mariner engine?

[/ QUOTE ] Yes and I would agree that you should not use an outboard oil in an air cooled engine for that reason. BUT the ordinary outboard oil is recommended for those air cooled outboards that I have checked on!! If I was still using it I really dont know what oil I would use in my old air cooled Volvo Penta outboard!
