Hi there,
Is anyone familiar with the impeller in this little monkey? I bought one off ebay recently and ran it up in a wheely bin. It seemed to be running too hot (just as I was thinking that it packed up, accompanied by a smell of burnt rubber).
There didn't seem to be a spray coming out with the exhaust gasses. I haven't started it since, but took the leg off last night.
See the pics here of the new impeller and the old one, along with the housing:

The guy who supplied the outboard also supplied the spare impeller - does the size look right? I have to bend the blades to get it to fit - doesn't look like it'll run freely. I have no idea if it ran ok before, and if so for how long...
The bush in the picture is slightly melted, but still would seem to fit.
I'm off to buy some liquid gasket, I'll take the head off and clean what I can see of the water passages. The pipe sticking up the leg looks free from debris - as does all the other openings. When it was running the engine sounded ok, if a bit smokey (grey).

Any advice appreciated! I have a manual that came with it a 1972 version - seems to be accurate for this model so far.
Thanks in advance! :)

According to the parts diagrams the pump impeller for a 1998 model is behind the prop, driven by the propshaft not like the '72 where its on top of the gear case driven by the vertical drive shaft. What is its model number ?

I reckon it must be 1985 or earlier. As far as I can see there were no 2hp models from 1986 through 1997, a new version emerging in 1998. The model number will tell though as its possible there were Belgium made models that dont appear in the American parts catalogs.

However as far as I can tell from the photos the impeller looks the same as the old one, but that is well and truly knackered. Looks as though its probably been run dry. Compare them carefully though

Yes you will have to bend the blades to get it in. Not a bad idea to rotate it into the housing in the direction in which it will run ( clockwise viewed from above) so that all the vanes are bent over the right way, but its not essential as it will sort itself out.

Inspect the condition of the cup and replace it if its damaged.

Good idea to also separate the power head from the leg and check the water ways where the top of water tube connects. Dont gunge everything up with silicone when you reassemble. Fft a new gasket if it's damaged. Lakey had one where the water channels were blocked with silicone.

Be careful to get the impeller dive pin in position. Often easy for it to pop out again unoticed at the last minute

Thanks Vic, it's a 1998 model - BE2RC0C as, you say Belgium made. I've just taken the head off, all looks ok with just a bit of salt deposit. Not enough to block it, channels in the head look ok - but can't tell beyond peering into them and sticking a bit of wire in!
Going to put it back together and have another go with the new impeller - try it without the prop on which might help.
Unfortunately I've only got liquid gasket - I'll use it sparingly!
Thanks again! :)

No 1985

B= Made in Belgium
E = Evinrude ( J = Johnson)
2= 2hp
R= rope start
C = 8, O = 5 Therefore a 1985 model!
C = a production suffix

Thanks! That makes more sense, not sure how I arrived at 98! :o
I've put it back together again - not tried it yet as the neighbours wouldn't be impressed!
I've added a couple of photo's of the head and leg, when they were parted. Since cleaned them up as best I can. It feels a bit "stiff" to turn over, but I suppose it's to be expected! :rolleyes:

Edit - the pics are still uploading, they'll be there in a min!

On the vague chance anyone is interested. Tonight was the first time I got chance to fire it up in the wheely bin after reassembling with new impeller. Fired up straight away and was giving a positive spray of water coming out with the exhaust - sounded a lot "happier" too! :)

Good thanks for the feed back
