Looking at the performance of the house battery bank (3 x 115Ahr) and engine start battery (2 x 70Ahr) on our boat, I was surprised to find that the engine battery was the one fitted at the factory when the boat was new. In 2009!

The house bank was replaced in 2014, making that 7-8 years old too!

Probably all due for replacement. But we've had no problems that we've noticed.

Haven't done any particularly long passages since CV-19, otherwise have just pottered up and down Cornwall and Devon.

It feels like unusual longevity. Is it?

I got 13 years out of 4 x 110 Ah house batteries. But they had precious little of that capacity towards the end.

Red Flash battery in my Morgan is the original factory fit from 2003. Killer for most boat batteries is long periods of inactivity followed by intensive cycling. However keeping them fully charged with either solar or shorepower will extend their life in both cycles and years.

My 2006 AGMs are still okish in my house bank but I am giving up hope for the starter which is the same vintage.

I have a Caterpillar digger which came in 2001 with a caterpillar battery which I took out if it last year...(non agm)

No doubt the quality of the manufacturing and materials is a huge factor, my treatment of these batteries would be best termed as abusive....

Previous boat batteries 13 years ,present batteries 11 years ,car battery Bosch 14 years,if you look after them they do last. The boat batteries were only cheap ones.

That's normal, anything between 8 and 15 years for a wet battery, in my experience, although even then, none had actually failed.

Starter batteries do last a long time as they have a very easy life. Typically them are used for a few seconds and the charge up immediately.
The one on my A4 Audi was changed in 2021 after 11 years, it still started the old beast but was getting a bit slow. Probably would have done another couple of years but I didn't want to push it. I've found that original fit batteries usually last well but replacements only last for the length of the warranty.

Just replaced the 2 120A Bosch house batteries on my 2006 Bav.
Original 12v starter battery still firing engine on first turn.
