12 volt to 6 volt adaptor

We have a 6 volt battery-powered radio using a maximum of 5 watts electrical power. Instead of using its own batteries, we wondered whether anyone has experience of a 12 to 6 volt adaptor so we could run it off the boat batteries. If a solution has to be built at home, I could make something (and can solder of sorts!).

Thanks,

Adrian.

Adrian, You need a DC-DC converter there is one in the Farnell catalog code no.329-8942 you could look it up on their website or try roadpro.co.uk all kinds of useful battery powered goodies, site is mainly for truckers but has some really interesting stuff. Trevor

Check the batteries, if you have the type with external bridges you can tap in in multiples of 2 volt(up to a maximum of 12) at no cost and without power loss through electronics or the attendant unreliability.

Chat up your local radio engineer. He should be able to buildin or build a decice to reduce the voltage from 12v to 6v for very little cost.

Davids suggestion is not to recommended except in an emergency,it will lead to a part charged/discharged battery. The electronic way is the correct way and will be as reliable as your radio anyway!
