12 volt sockets

I'm pleased I started this thread as it turns out it's not just me that thinks there's a need for a standard. When I started the thread I refered to my last boat which had round pin sockets. They were similar to these and seems to work well. Obviously you need to decide which pin is to be Positive etc and stick to it but on the whole they worked well and looked good too. The thing is that there already is a standard. We all agree it's not a very good standard, but it's not quite awful enough to have been ousted in favour of something else. So by all means you can adopt something else on your boat if you prefer, but you'll have to modify every 12v device you buy in order to work with it.

Widely used for bike and scooter battery chargers, the seem pretty robust but I have not seen waterproof ones.

Also widely used for glider batteries. Booker Gliding Club wire theirs with the opposite polarity from everyone else's, so that if you steal one you blow either your charger or your electronics, depending on what you plug it into first.

How often do Booker Gliding Club blow up their own stuff by accidentally using standard kit? :)
