In a car the risk of ending upside down under water is generally considered to be somewhat less than the risk of the car stopping hard enough to post you through the windscreen. Did I really need to point that out?

That was a long read, over nothing.
Storm in a teacup.
A good driver had an accident. His son got hurt but rescued by the driver.
Happens in cars all the time, with much worse consequences.
I suspect the mere fact of having to rescue his boy and drag him unconscious from that boat is something that will be with him for the rest of his life. He certainly doesn't need a bunch of folk pointing the finger and tut tutting.
And as for asking for legislation, talk about digging your own grave!
I would be very surprised if sailing does not have a far worse safety record than power-boating, people in glass houses and all that.

+2.
From a fast boat owner we are not hooligans we appreciate the surroundings and give other boats plenty of room, I use the main channel for any fast runs, From what some are proposing then the Red Jet should also be going slower than its 40knots.From reading this thread all the way through this appears to have lost its way and become another mobo bashing thread by yachties whom think they own the water.
I was spectating a P1 powerboat event in the Solent many years ago. The course was well marked and plenty of safety boats around but some yacht owners insisted that they should be allowed to sail right across the course while racing was going on. How dangerous is that ???
How many crashes happen each year in the round the Island race ..........
What about the British sailor that was very unfortunately killed in the US while training for the America's Cup. These Sailing boats are capable of speeds in excess of 50mph. The crew do not wear safety harnesses .........
Please read the thread on the mobo section and the reply from Simon whom was in the nav seat that day,

I think you are missing the point of the poor judgement involved by the driver of this speed boat.

I hope you believe me when I say that I do not have a personal vendetta against mobos or their owners.
Some of my best pals have or did have mobos.
The sailing club house inland that we hold our meetings at is a mobo club.

I have travelled on many mobos with great pleasure.

However, some in all groups get it wrong.
I do know sailors who are unpleasant on and off the water...... selfish/arrogant too.

It doesn't take away the fact that those who do stupid things need advising and guiding correctly..... it's what a democratic civilised society does.

The fact that this incident didn't involve any others outside the boat is a Godsend.
