Just about to take the pride-and-joy out of her winter storage and onto swinging mooring.

Perfectly feasible to padlock the boat to the buoy but is it possible to get an inexpensive battery driven camcorder set up to deter or identify thieves, vandals and other low-life.

If the mooring is in range of mobile phone coverage you could get a Reolink Go security camera with solar panel.

I thinks it's Vodafone that do a special SIM deal for security cameras (details on the Reolink website).

Can't guarantee it'll stop unwanted visitors but at least you'll be able to see the boat at any time you wish...

Once they've got on board, (with balaclavas on ofc) they will disconnect the camera and take the boat of to Greece and you'll never know.

With a SIM card in the camera, it can be set to record (upon detecting motion) to the Reolink cloud.

Belt and braces would be both a camera and a tracker although I only mentioned the Reolink because a camera was mentioned in the original post.

I agree. It would be nice to see their faces, but once they've smashed the camera it won't be much use.

Although with Apple Airtags, haven't Apple added a feature now (in response to security concerns) that let you know if someone might have put one in your clothes/bag, to inform you that you might be being tracked without your knowledge..

If any of the thieves have iPhones that would report back on the object location (to the owner) they will also know that they're being followed by that Airtagged object..

So a useful thing to find your own mislaid belongings but not so good for tracking somebody (or in this case something) without their knowledge.

There are plenty of tiny cameras available today that there is no need to have large box style anymore. Many also have wifi or cable link to whatever ....

You could set up a camera that is hidden ... powered from on-board battery + voltage reducer ... linked via various communication units and / or DVR.

The days of such being boxes that you cannot hide are long gone .....

Just a search in such as Banggood for security / spy cameras will open the door to examples of whats available today.

But only if said thieves (or others being tracked) buy or nick Apple phones, and not those of their competitors.

There must be many locations on anything but a dinghy where an airtag might be detectable but not retrievable. There’s one on our boat, it’s unlikely to be found. However, we don’t need it on our home mooring. There's a swing bridge between us and open water, and we are personally known to the harbour staff.

Deterrence only needs a dummy box and maybe a sign. Of course that might signal to a curious miscreant that there is something worth nicking on board. Actual evidence may or may not be useful from a camera depending on quality, daylight, weather etc but even if it is someone still has to identify them and even if you are lucky and it results in a conviction they'll likely not have the money to make good the damage etc. Save your money for insurance, good locks etc.

do you think your average marine villain wears something so conspicuous?
{quote]they will disconnect the camera and take the boat of to Greece and you'll never know.[/quote] but it will have sent there image? Do stolen yachts really get sailed to Greece from the UK - that's quite a trip to make with a lot of things that could go wrong and lots of officials to pass on the way. The OP sounds more worried about vandalism and petty theft than nicking the boat. Certainly I've never really been concerned that someone would nick the boat, but an outboard, dinghy, VHF, etc are all far easier to dispose of. I think that in most areas the logistic challenge of getting to / from a swinging mooring mean it needs someone with more knowledge/skill/equipment than most thieves can be bothered with.

The things you need to think about are:
Padlock on the morning: will it seize?
The bow of about on a mooring is a really harsh environment.
Also unless you go for a pretty expensive one then a set of bolt crops will take it out in 10 seconds flat.

Hatch lock..
If padlock see above
Also do you really want to make the boat too secure? A crow bar can open most hatches, so how much damage do you want a thief to do to your pride and joy?

Anything electric needs power.
So will need to be connected to solar panel and a big battery... Also it is probably not marine grade so how long will it last outside?

Trackers have some value, but probably more to alert you to the boat breaking off it mooring than theft.

In Poole Harbour the location of the mooring makes a big difference. ie how accessible is it from a quiet beach etc....
