I agree. It would be nice to see their faces, but once they've smashed the camera it won't be much use.

There must be many locations on anything but a dinghy where an airtag might be detectable but not retrievable. There’s one on our boat, it’s unlikely to be found. However, we don’t need it on our home mooring. There's a swing bridge between us and open water, and we are personally known to the harbour staff.
Deterrence only needs a dummy box and maybe a sign. Of course that might signal to a curious miscreant that there is something worth nicking on board. Actual evidence may or may not be useful from a camera depending on quality, daylight, weather etc but even if it is someone still has to identify them and even if you are lucky and it results in a conviction they'll likely not have the money to make good the damage etc. Save your money for insurance, good locks etc.
