A genuine question, out of interest and not for a mega fall out.....

Has anyone on here ever been doinged by another boat whilst at anchor at night? Or doinged another one yourself?

Someone on the forum - can’t remember who - was hit by a fishing boat and seriously damaged. Anchor light way up in the sky, fishing skipper couldn’t see it from inside his wheelhouse.

Yes, had a drunk in a speedboat try and kill himself: only just missed our sugar scoop but took out the pushpit. That was with masthead light, utility light in the cockpit and a couple of solar lights round the deck.

In the melee post fireworks show. Masthead anchor light was on as required. Box ticked.

Not in a typical anchorage. Or where Boat is kept on a mooring.

Succinct and crisp. ;)

Almost got “taken out” by a Thames barge under sail, running up river out of the fairway, presumably to cheat the ebb tide. They didn’t expect to see me and weren’t looking as carefully as they might have been under the foresail. This was a very long time ago in my first boat, and I had carefully calculated the depth at low water and anchored, drawing all of two feet, "out of the fairway" without thinking that a barge might want to use the same bit of water when the tide was higher.

I know most here don't have a professional license to lose but I was asked by a previous colleague why I insisted on making the appropriate sound signals constantly, my answer was because if the sh1t hits the fan I can say i did everything by the book at any inquiry, I wonder if the insurance companies see it the same way? Most if not all the rules are simple and easy to comply with - why fight them?

Yup, same with colregs, plus its just easier to read and comply instead of making your own rules up. Though personally I go for 'is this really the best way to go right here right now..' then check compliance, invariable the best way to go is within the irpcs. Like a bright low anchor light :cool:

Very good point, I think. Often happens with the colleges threads. Those of us that do often hold a different opinion to those that don't. And before the inevitable responses, I find all opinions interesting!
 
On the sound signals: every ship has a simple gadget that you switch on and which makes the fog signal automatically. I’ve never seen one for a yacht.

I have on a fair few. Simple as you say, push the button and at intervals not exceeding two minutes, thar she blows. Select between one long or one long and two shorts.

Beware however, the selection of speaker to voice. It can be abused in harbour.......

Happens here constantly. Hang the anchor ball/light where is can best be seen in the front of the boat - why is it at almost 100 posts?!

On the sound signals: every ship has a simple gadget that you switch on and which makes the fog signal automatically. I’ve never seen one for a yacht.

A lot of VHF radios these day have the option for automatic fog signals but of course you need a suitable outside speaker.
