Yawn. Love throwing cold water on other people’s ambition much? Suggest you read your post again and ask how you want to be perceived online.

Happy New Year from Hong Kong!

HK was - for me - a chance to walk the many trails at the weekend. Maclehose, Hong Kong, Lantau. I loved going out into the relative wilds after working in Kowloon. And there are some quite big hills out there; Tai Mo Shan would be a Munro if transplanted to the homeland. I was also lucky enough...

Manoeuvring long keel sailboat out of birth in wind - Any tips?

In the same way that gentlemen don’t sail to windward, Nicholson 55/43 owners don’t motor astern. It’s not the done thing.

Manoeuvring long keel sailboat out of birth in wind - Any tips?

I thought that sounded familiar then I worked out who you are. Hello, fellow pointy Nicholson owner! 👋

I think theirs is a 46. Very different.

    Current design trends

“In its lifting keel and rotating mast version, the cruiser can sail along canals and rivers to its sailing grounds” So says the brochure… so I’m going for ‘folding mast’ as the best translation.

    Current design trends

I’m fairly sure that ‘rotating mast’ has been lost in translation and actually means folding mast. I may be wrong but that’s what the brochure suggests.

    Are mobile phone alarms reliable?

Snap. I’ve only set one in the last five years and this was the following morning when it had calmed down quite a lot.

    Lyme Regis - Yacht Ashore

That does look like a Nic 43. Does anyone know if that is Oberon? She has two headsails, a blue sprayhood and an alloy vang. Only asking because (a) I’ve got a Nic 43, (b) there are only 22 left, and (c) I’ve been on Oberon. Hope the boat is ok regardless of which one it is. My wife has been on...

    Lofrans Royal Windlass malfunction question

When my Lofrans Tigres windlass broke I desperately needed a new one to keep the family holiday going. The motor had failed so I decided to buy a new one and fix the old one at my leisure and then flog it. Half way through the holiday I tried to remove the old one but as the family had departed...

LochAline - suitable for winter afloat?

I’ve been in Lochaline in the summer during a southerly gale where I had all 80 metres of 10mm chain out and was still pretty nervous. So it would be a big fat no from me! I was in the anchorage on the west side, south of the marked spit.

Source for new brushes for a winch motor?

I sourced brushes for my Lofrans from www.nova.uk.com. I sent dimensions and a photo and they identified them.

Harken MkII furler replacement - help please

In theory it could. But that would mean that the entire furler would rotate, extending the male upper part attached to the Stalock fitting. It was not extended when I dismantled the furler, so in my view the lower bar couldn't have undone in that scenario. The mystery remains!

Harken MkII furler replacement - help please

    316. I still can't work out what happened but in the end replacement was the best option. The bar was much further out of the female thread than it has ever been previously and the yard said they would not have touched the locknut. So your guess is as good as mine, but I should get another few...
