Hamble River - Upstream of Bridge

We've been up a few times with inflatable &outboard. You can get all way to Curbridge & pub going up with the tide with the outboard but taking the West arm, we continually grounded upstream of the Boat House. You might get up to Botley OK toward hw rowing a dinghy or in kayak Alternatively...

Bukh DV20 Diesel, Sulphur, Engine Oil - all very confusing

Pretty sure recommended oil in my original Bukh DV20 manual (1982 vintage) says SAE20 CC for both gearbox and engine. 20 is now rare, so I use HD30 for older diesels, which is readily obtainable from high st car parts shops eg Carlube products.

Marine running repairs (tiller) Swanage area

Thanks for the helpful replies. The original tiller was wood laminate. I fell against it heavily & it broke off at the head, with no stub. I did jam the remainder losely in the head stock at the break and lashed tiller extension on as an emergency splint to enable us to steer with the tow, but...

Marine running repairs (tiller) Swanage area

Boat just towed into Swanage by the Lifeboat due to tiller broken off in stock on our Moody 29 whilst on family sailing holiday between Peverell Point & St Aldhelms Head. Boat currently on an RNLI Bouy in the harbour. Many thanks to them on a busy shout day.The jury rig I did is not something I...

    Bukh DV20 running temp.

Just as Vic says, think it is relative current to the buzzer in respective positions. After engine fires of course and key released, buzzer should stop. However, the diode plate can be a source of problems with false overheat alarms or even intermittent warbling when running. As Vic says. later...

    Bukh DV20 running temp.

Normal function. Key to the left of centre is used to stop the engine and the buzzer is to ensure you re-centre the ignition key after engine has stopped to avoid burning out the stop solenoid. After starting engine (key to rt of centre x2 posns), buzzer will (should) stop but would come on if...

    Victoire 1044 v Victoria 34 .... any thoughts?

Just caught up with the posts. Paul H is Old Varnish. Just reading about his trip down to Cape Horn in the Victoria 38 in his book One Wild Song, on Kindle. Very well written and extraordinarily moving. Surprised at alleged poor reactions to sailing the V34 in some posts. Don't really think...

    Victoire 1044 v Victoria 34 .... any thoughts?

Don't know the Victoire but the Victoria 34 was a Chuck Paine design, linked with the Frances and a lot built in the yard at Warsash. Love the concept and look of the boat. I think a yachtsman's yacht. Would be my semi-realistic 2nd hand yacht of choice if I had the money to purchase one, but...

What are chances of getting a visitors buoy in Newton Creek tomorrow?

Its Newtown Creek btw, but if you dont draw much and can get down to the buoys closer to the Shalfleet Quay end, where water a little thinner you have a reasonable chance even on a Saturday, especially since closer to end of season now. However anchoring isnt a real issue there, esp again if...

Suggestions for after dinner (boaty) speaker required please!

At the MOA AGM in Oxford a couple of years ago we had a talk by Roger Taylor of Ming Ming fame. Very interesting speaker. Have also attendend a couple of after sailing dinner talks by John Goode. Riotously funny and entertaining.

Anchoring at Worborough Bay, Chapmans Pool and Lulworth Cove

Stayed in the Cove in Weymouth a no of times, but now find the old brewery area over developed & constantly busy, so we were in Portland Marina for the first time for 4 nights in early July and found it very convivial, with good facilities & reasonable charges. The Harbour Lights is the Marina...
