    Boat modification – insurance question

Many thanks for all your excellent advice - I will give this very serious thought. My first choice would have been epoxy, but I was advised by the surveyor not to, as he knew the boat layup very well and he advised polyester. As I need to be 100% in the structural integrity and to satisfy the...

    Boat modification – insurance question

Re. Using Epoxy… I did consider this but my understanding from the builders of the original boat and independent advice was that there is a remote possibility of bond failure with epoxy bonding to the original layup and that the gel-coat finish will not adhere very well to the epoxy. The...

    Boat modification – insurance question

I am in the process of replacing failed old twin engine sterndrives with a brand new modern single engine sterndrive in a budget cruiser and the overall HP will be similar. Before anyone comments … I have already gone past the point of no return! The modification work to the transom is...

Bilge blower type and timer or not?

Absolutely.. also if the fan is to be on all the time, then it needs to be continuously rated. Some of the “budget” fans are not meant to be on all the time and in some cases (unlikely but not impossible) could overheat

Bilge blower type and timer or not?

Hi, I not sure if this overkill!!! Personally, I like manual control as you need to run the blowers for around 5 minutes before starting the engine(s), no wake zones, when the engine has stopped and refuelling etc. With my original petrol twin set-up, I had 3 blowers. 2 were manual controlled...

    How to clean fuel tank

An off the wall suggestion.. but maybe worth a try - but time consuming. How about dosing the tank with something like Startron Tank Cleaner, leaving for 24 hours then use a cheap hand transfer pump from the fuel filter output and “drawing” the fuel into containers. You probably need a couple...

2 cranking batteries and 1 domestic?

I am probably way off the mark here, but I wonder if you have an Anchor Winch and how is power supplied to that? In some quarters they recommend a Cranking Battery for the Anchor Winch!

    Swaymar Marine

Thank you for the information – that’s good to know. I have spoken to them and they are very helpful and I have been invited to the factory to see a couple of newly built engines. We do not have a lot of choice in the UK these days for replacement engines unless you trust to luck on a “good”...

    Swaymar Marine

Hi, bit of a long shot but has anyone have any experience on Swaymar Marine Engines? I am looking at a 380Hp petrol engine that is hand built based on a 6.2L V8 Small Block Chevy 377cid. They look rather special marine engines with high quality components but although new looks like they are...

    Water Tank Sender.

Hi, I have an old Fairline and it has a water tank sender which has only ever partially worked. It is in a stainless tube permanently fixed to the tank. I have tried normal tank cleaning etc to no avail. It currently reads 100 ohms with the tank empty. Can these senders be cleaned? I have heard...

    Volvo Penta AQ Engine removal

Just an update on this. The Clamp Ring was indeed seized to the bobtail, however the Clamp ring did have three offset threaded holes and the old flywheel bolts did indeed push off the ring - eventually. Many thanks for your help and advice.

    Volvo Penta AQ Engine removal

Hi, Thank you for your response. That is correct - the 6 x 9/16 have been removed, but that ring seems to be stuck fast ... tried a large bar and screwdriver but was worried about damage. The bell housing bolts are VERY difficult to access due to lack of space. I Have plenty of room to move the...

    Volvo Penta AQ Engine removal

Hi, Quick question if I may. I am removing my AQ171c Engine and need to ask a question regarding the Clamp Ring. The sterndrives have been removed. 6 bolts holding the flywheel have been removed . All hoses and electrical connections have been disconnected etc and is basically ready for the...

    Re-powering options.

Hi, I am still waiting for a reply from a couple of suppliers, even phoning goes to voicemail but I will look further at other suppliers. I must admit though I am concerned they may be a little underpowered. but would be a good option otherwise. I know one or two boats that had twin 120HP and...
