    Yanmar 1GM10 starting query

from cold mine always started with just a bit of throttle, and from warm with none

whats your boat, and at what wind speed to you reef?

Trapper 500, consider reefing when it's more force 5 than 4. Force 4 is 11 -16 knots and 5 is 17-21. I have a wind speed indicator and if its pushing 5 as opposed to just passing 4, its time to think of reefing - depending on how things feel. The Trapper handbook suggests reefing early

    Stern gland tighten or not?

agree that stilsons are 'blunt instuments'. if you can get large open ended spanners that would be better, but use what you've got. Agree that the nuts may well look worse than they are. Suggest a bit of common sense about trying to loosen them. Try to back off the lock nut, and then tighten...

    Boats Cool Box

Rather than ice, the freezer packs that caravan sites sell are better. And you can get them refrozen at marinas where they have a small supermarket I think - you certainly can at caravan sites.

Yanmar 1GM10 - problems through lack of use ?

as long as it turns over easily and it starts from cold (a good test for compression) it should be okay. the elbow is worth checking the anode is easy to check but the impellor is a bit of a sod - one of the bolts on the cover is almost inaccessible so its okay to get out with a spanner but...

gps anchor drag setting - recommendations please

my gps instructions say the anchor drag can be set to a 'user defined value'. Does anyone have any suggestions of what would be a useful setting without waking me up when the tide changes?

    Rudder pulls to one side

knowing nothing but sticking in some observations, wouldn't sorting out the asymmetry be best as a trim tab would simply be doubling the drag in the other direction........there must be some unwanted drag on one side that could be got rid of

Sterilising tablets v water purification tablets

I think there is a difference - sterilising stuff sterilises and then gets rinsed off......i don't think you drink it........i sterilise my caravan system with a steriliser and then rinse it through - the boat water supply seems to stay fresh with no taste without any attention although the...

Which depth sounder? In hull or through hull? Cheap or dear?

i have had two boats with through the hull transducers which work fine. Only issue is to make sure they are fully bonded to the hull with no air bubbles or in oil. The NASA target ones are inexpensive and work well. They are also available through chandlers for after sales service and that...

i did a stupid thng today

there's a strong possibility you'll get away with it. I did. Agree about the impellor though. If you switched off when the temperature alarm went off based on my expereince you should be alright. After all that's what the alarm is for.

    DAB radio on a boat

as far as FM ariels go I've always got away with a good length of coax - and as the boat is fibreglass it can run along inside....... so maybe your new DAB would work with that

    Anode Question 2

search on ebay - i have the same engine and found a new anode of the screw in type with refills for about £4......I think the new brass screw part and the first anode cost me about £8....... not worth the hassle of doing it yourself

Trapper 31/940 What do you know?

Google Trapper 31 and you'll get all the info you need. I've got a trapper 500 and if that's anything to go by you won't be disappointed by the 31 although it sby a different designer and from the end of the trapper marque's production

Trot mooring and fast tidal stream

I have one of those buoy catchers that lets you thread a line through the ring on the buoy. When I'm single handed I have a line rigged to the boat's cleat already and when I get to the buoy I run the line through. I actually moor with the bows against the tide so it means running the line...
