Rather than ice, the freezer packs that caravan sites sell are better. And you can get them refrozen at marinas where they have a small supermarket I think - you certainly can at caravan sites.

The ice is best on top, cold flows down.

We take frozen food for Saturday night and a couple of cool packs if it's a W/E. A frozen 2 or 4 pint milk canister works well too.

For a longer holiday we use party ice if it's warm enough to need it. It's a pain if the milk goes off too fast.

The false bottom is good to keep stuff out of the melt water if there is any.
