    Identifying rope material

If it floats, then it's probably polypropylene. If it doesn't then probably nylon.

Do spare gas bottles need to be in a gas locker?

Ideally they should but it depends whether you have space. My gas locker can only fit a single cylinder so the spare lives in a different locker and I ensure the cylinder is fully closed. It happily doesn't leak. If it did leak, then it would probably do so also when connected so wouldn't be...

    Solent Hard Standing

I don't think they can dredge. But boats going ashore can access the boat yard at high tides. With 1.5m draught, I need a high tide of 4.6m or higher but one can plan around that.

    Solent Hard Standing

Thornham marina is pretty competitive, but you'd need to check your draught as access is limited. I know that boats up to 1.8m draught can get in and out at high spring tides

New furling system for small cruiser

Have a look at the Alado - simpler and likely cheaper than pretty much any other system. It ships from Brazil but I have found the company to be very efficient and very supportive. I needed some parts (due to my mistake) and they dispatched them very quickly.

    Netherlands Tidal Stream Atlases

Netherland's Hydrographic Office Tidal stream atlases for Noordzee (HP19) and Waddenzee West (HP17). In near mint condition. Published in 1992 but I doubt the tidal streams have changed much since. £12 for the two including UK postage.

    Exe moorings

Does anyone know whether/where one can find a deep water mooring on the Exe for a 9.2 meter fin keel sailing boat (draws 1.5 metres)? Likely to be moving to the West Country later this year and my current mooring in Chichester Harbour will be a bit far to travel.

    Doogee rugged tablets?

My Ulefone phone is definitely rugged and is sold as such. It's been thrown across the room, dropped in shallow water and is definitely tougher than, for example, the various non-rugged phones that my grandchildren have that are forever suffering broken screens and water damage/destruction...

Latest rules for sailing to UK via Channel Islands from France with a dog with an EU Pet Passport.

I'm not sure of this, so do check carefully: I think you may be able to convey your dog if you sail from France to Eire, and then to UK.

    How could this happen?

From an article in today's Guardian. Any thoughts on how something like this could happen? The explanation in the article seems unlikely. The boat in question was a Sunseeker 620 recreational fishing boat. 'Hohnen dropped anchor, made sure everything was secure, and went to sleep next to his...

    Lecky question

I think that those types of devices will so rarely be needed that the initial cost plus the effort to remember to keep it charged, possibly for years, without ever using it, means that it cannot be justified.
